Traveling to St. Thomas, US Virgin Islands. What docs do I need?
Going to St. Thomas. through Miami.
You'd think it would be easy, but I've called the airlines, checked the USVI website, etc. and get different answers. My biggest concern is I don't have a passport. But one thing that I consistently read and am told is I don't need a passport to go to and from the US to US Virgin Islands. So, no passport required. Any disagreement with that? American Airlines said all I need is a US Driver's License. Other places say I need an original birth certificate, too. On the birth certificate, I remember many years ago when I flew to Cabo San Lucas there was some kind of issue with my birth certificate, it wasn't the exact right kind of certificate (been a while, I don't remember exactly what the issue was). I remember I had to sign some kind of affidavit at the airport before they'd let me go. So, Driver's License ok, or do I need more? |
Well, if you have time I'd suggest you get a passport, but I think you're ok.
When you get a long way from home, it never hurts to at least have all your options open, as far as traveling here, or there, etc. |
Valid DL is enough.
|
Yup, you'll be in the US so no need for a passport
|
I know - I don't have time to get a passport in the normal course, and I rarely travel outside the continental US. I could get one expedited if I had to, but I'm hoping to avoid that if I can.

Valid DL and a slip of paper with Jims phone # in case you need a lawyer lol....
|
We were told the same thing a few years ago. But I carry my passport even when I travel in the US.
|
That was fast, thanks all!
I'll bring my DL, but I'll also carry my birth certificate just in case. |
You only need a DL to go there, but you will need a passport or birth certificate to come back. The U.S. Virgin Islands are considered by the TSA to be a port of entry to the U.S. so you will need proof of U.S. citizenship to come back to the U.S.
|
Take the birth certificate. I traveled back and forth about once every couple of months from St Croix for a year (2005/2006) and was never asked for a passport, even though I had one. But definitely take your BC!
|
Rot 911 is correct...I stand corrected. I just checked on the State Dept website. You only need your DL to enter USVI but you'll need your BC to prove citizenship in addition to valid DL to get back.

You need the "go suck an egg cause I'm not going to the islands" document.
