WSJ is reporting that a passenger tried to light his shoes on a flight from Washington to Denver.

A passenger attempted to light an explosive device aboard an airliner flying from Washington to Denver on Wednesday night but was subdued by federal air marshals who restrained the suspect as he allegedly tried to set his shoes on fire.

The aircraft declared an emergency and landed safely at Denver, its destination. A person familiar with the incident identified the plane as United Flight 663.

It was a frigging Arab diplomat who was a drug addict and could not abide by the rules to not smoke on an airplane. He went in the bathroom to grab a smoke and screwed everyone elses day on the flight. They should have thrown him out of the plane at altitude...

Or "early reporting." Stories like this always change as more details are solidified.

A federal official said that the man went to the bathroom to smoke a cigarette, and was confronted by air marshals on board the plane. The passenger understood he had diplomatic immunity, and made sarcastic comments that the marshals took as a threat, said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

“The situation here is not like the shoe bomber,” the official said, alluding to the December 2001 incident in which Richard C. Reid, a self-admitted member of Al Qaeda, had attempted to detonate explosives hidden in his shoes on a trans-Atlantic flight.

Several law enforcement officials said late Wednesday that no bomb had been found on Wednesday’s flight. Still, the passenger was being questioned by the F.B.I., as were fellow passengers, and the investigation was continuing, they said.

Two F-16 fighters from Buckley Air Force Base, in Colorado, were scrambled to intercept the plane, the authorities said. They escorted it for the last five minutes of its flight, and it landed safely in Denver.

WSJ is the new National Enquirer, just substitute sensational political/financial for batboy/alien abduction. You would never have seen that story, or any story like it, 4 years ago in the WSJ. I recommend The Economist.

Man is from Qatar, and he smoked in the rest room. When an Air Marshall confronted him, he said "I was trying to light my shoes on fire". I guess he was trying to be funny, but he really effed up a whole lot of people's evening.

Why do we grant diplomatic immunity? It only causes problems for us.

Diplomatic immunity works all around. It protects the diplomats from idiot rulers, police, secret service and so on who might hassle you.

Remember, WE, the United States, have diplomats around the world as well who are using their immunity just as this idiot did. Hopefully they are using it in a smarter way.
