mercury poisoning, had to go to NY to get cured

Drove to New York and trailered back a 1966 Mercury Comet, has a 289. Will need some work but it's pretty straight. It was a long haul for the old truck.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1270823198.jpg

Looks like it.

I hate seeing old American Muscle running around on new 19 in blinged out rims. Just looks wrong.

Verry cool car! I had it's FoMoCo sister, a '66 Fairlane GT 390 in Highland Green.

steve185 04-09-2010 04:01 PM

Thanks for the comments. Yes, those are Keystones. I plan to keep them but I will get rid of the hood pins.

Buckterrier 04-09-2010 05:01 PM

Very cool car Steve. Those cars had great lines. What are your plans for it?
(I had a 67 Fairlane ragtop)

A930Rocket 04-09-2010 05:08 PM

That's a sweet ride. Congrats!

I plan to get the four speed in it, rebuild the 289 as fast as possible and drive it. I have no intentions of a restoration, it definitely will be a driver. I can't decide on a color though.

UconnTim97 04-09-2010 06:07 PM

Guards red?

m21sniper 04-09-2010 06:21 PM

I like it. I like the hood pins and the keystones too.

Joeaksa 04-09-2010 07:14 PM

Very nice!

Jagshund 04-09-2010 07:36 PM

Love it. An old friend of mine had what I recall to have been a '67 LTD with a 429(?). Stacked lights rock.

too much car for too little of an engine.

My choice would be a 351 W with a 408 stroker kit, afr 225 heads, Edelbrock Air Gap RPM intake, a cam around 286/296 with a centerline of 112 and a lift in the
.510 range The carb should be the 825 to 850 range

Skip the 4 spd and drop in a Tremec with 5 spd/overdrive

Rear gears around 3.90 to 4.11's will wake it right up but still let you cruise at 75-80 around 2,800 rpm (150 mph will be in the 5,ooo rpm range)

Jim has a good plan...and you'll be amazed how much less expensive Detroit performance is...;)

Jim Bremner 04-09-2010 09:36 PM

the only way I would keep the 289 would be TWINNS!

Turbos, and lots of gears that's a 3.400 pound car...kinda like a new 911

a240hp at the flywheel aint goin'a move sheepdip!

Thought in American iron that "bigger is better?"

Agree with your idea on going bigger but how about a 428 or so? :)

Joe have you EVER worked on a 428? I will never own a FE series motor! Unless it's a 427 just due to the fact that it's a 427

429/460 motor will fit in the Cyclone merc's engine bay! that's an engine. None of Hey, we have to take ALL 16 pushrods off to change the intake manifold! Nor does the LIMA series 429/460's have that STUPID little 1 1/2" long hose that's between the water pump and the block that you can't change with out removing the water pump!

my '66 fairlane was a 390 car, same engine series "FE" as the 428

My Dad built some wicked FE motors that lapped Riverside and Ontario Speedway fairly well.

I used to pull 7/16" studs out of the cast iron heads on my 390! FE engines rocker arms rotate on a shaft that runs the lenght of the head I broke a couple of shafts on that car as well.

I broke the fingers on the Mcleod clutch

I broke the output shaft on the toploader

I broke the rear shocks off of the car (I might have lifted the front end off of the ground on that launch

Actually the '66/'67 Fairlane and Comet with a small block Ford are under 3000 pounds. They move out quite nicely with a hipo 289.

I actually think they are too flimsy a car for big block power without some reinforcement. It's a unibody car with very little structure. They don't have beefy longitudinals like a 911.
