Southern lawn question

I currently have Bahaia grass for my lawn. Most of the lawn does OK but I have a large oak tree that has a large canopy so the lawn doesn't get much sun. I don't want ST. Augustine ( too much water ) so I'm thinking of Zoysia. Anyone have experience with Zoysia ? Good , bad other ? Any other suggestions for a lawn that primarily is in the shade in sandy soil ? I'm not looking for lawn of the year :D and I want fairly low maintenance.

All the people I know have had generally bad luck with it (Tampa area) but this could likely be attributed to a general lack of enthusiasm in the area of lawn-care. Not sure how Bermuda does in more sandy soil (although it does really well in sand when our lawn's been freshly leveled) but it is typically low-maintenance and the 'wild' variety spreads without much coercion.

Burmuda can easily take the heat - may also want to look into a Fescue. There are now available tropic versons that do very well in mixed sun and sandy soil. Very good grass - its what many ball fields use. It isn't as soft as Zoysia but it will stay greener longer. St. Augustine is pretty much the grass of choice it seems like - just browns up in the winter sooner it seems.

call the county ag. extension agent (your tax dollahs at work)

be sure to tell them about the oak tree

the tree is dropping tannins (from the leaves) onto the grass to kill it - it is shading the grass & it is using its roots to pull water away from the grass

trees & grasses have been battling each other for a long time...
