Anybody take Intro to Computer Foresics -3253

Thinking about picking up an evening class in the fall for giggles... this sounds fun...

Anybody know what it consists of?

legion 04-12-2010 05:11 PM

Never heard of it.

I can't imagine what they could teach you in a semester on this topic.

porsche4life 04-12-2010 05:17 PM

Kind of what I was wondering... Going to email the department head as there isn't an instructor listed... Rumor has it that an OSBI agent teaches it...

Sounds like it's an intro to run-of-the-mill techniques for data recovery and researching a person's online presence. You don't even really have to know how to do much anymore: there's software available that does it all for you.

It'll probably be interesting, but it won't land you a job with the FBI. This is the kind of stuff local PDs do (and usually rather poorly).

porsche4life 04-12-2010 05:37 PM

Not looking for a job at the FBI really... I mean my major is Pharmacy so its rather irrelevant...

Just sounded cool and I thought it would be an easy A....

legion 04-12-2010 05:49 PM

It probably would be...

I have a book on computer security from the late 1970's. One of the main focuses was on fire damage and keeping the door to the tape and disk room locked.

VincentVega 04-12-2010 06:37 PM

That's funny. Keep the cards away from your cigarettes :)

Anyone can run a utility, but you have to know what, how and why to use the tool. I wish they offered stuff like this when I was an undergrad. I only had to choose from VB or C++.

legion 04-12-2010 07:06 PM

I'm trying to learn Java right now. It's a goofy language. It uses every kind of bracket, and strings are implemented as arrays.

cstreit 04-12-2010 07:08 PM

Legion... Ever look at PHP pattern matching strings? SHoot me in the HEAD! Good thing is that independant PHP coders are super cheap right now...

legion 04-12-2010 07:17 PM

Never touched PHP.

Exchanged emails with the instructor today... Going to see him tomorrow....

porsche4life 04-14-2010 08:41 AM

Went and saw the guy... I was not aware that the OSBI had an office on campus... But the instructor is a badge and gun weaning OSBI agent...

LakeCleElum 04-14-2010 08:50 AM

I know a guy that took a few courses like this at the expense of the Police Dept where he was a detective.....Once trained, he quit his job and went into business for himself.....Makes very good money, usually works for attorneys.

porsche4life 04-14-2010 08:55 AM

The teacher was telling me about some class they are going to offer that would end in a certification test.... Something I might look into if I have the space in my schedule...

I might be a valuable asset to certain agencies... With a PharmD and some computer forensics abilities....

Or the Russian Mob. (Why limit your options?) ;)

porsche4life 04-14-2010 09:01 AM

I didn't say said agencies where on the right side of the law...

LSA 04-14-2010 11:01 AM

Sounds like a fun class, I'd take it on the side if it was offered around here, unfortunately it's only C++ and Java which I've taken already. Ironically though as a Cs major I HATE programming.

My programming professor called PhP Perfectly Horrible Programming.

So an SQL statement goes in to a bar, walks up to two tables, and asks:

Mind if I join you?

:D
