Not a good Monday for me, but still extremely lucky.

Two dead in hospital shooting, 2 others injured
The Parkwest Medical Center in Knoxville, Tennessee, will have chaplains and counselors available throughout the day Tuesday after an apparent murder-suicide left one of its employees dead and two wounded.

A gunman shot three women outside the hospital Monday afternoon before apparently turning the gun on himself, police said.

One of the victims, Rachel Wattenbarger, 40, died from gunshot wounds at Parkwest, police said.

The suspected gunman also died, said Knoxville Police Chief Sterling Owen. His identity was withheld pending family notification.

The two survivors - Ariane Guerin, 26, and Nancy Chancellor, 32 - were taken to the trauma center at the University of Tennessee hospital.

Parkwest was locked down immediately after the shooting, but was reopened by Monday evening. "The hospital is open; investigation is continuing," the medical center said in a statement.

The weapon used in the shooting was a seven shot .357 magnum revolver reported stolen in Knox Co. in March this year. Five of seven rounds had been discharged.

Entire incident took five seconds.

Suspect was experiencing psychological problems. Was upset with a doctor who he thought had implanted a microchip during routine surgery in 2001 and thought that he was being tracked. Was seeking out the doctor at the hospital. Did not find him at his office and went to the patient discharge area where the shootings occurred.

Family had expressed concerns about the suspect's mental state and had requested help. Suspect had been committed in February. Investigators believe that he was not taking his meds.

No handgun carry permit, both weapons illegal (.22 had altered serial number, .357 was reported stolen). Investigators do not know how suspect obtained either weapon.
My wife got out of work 10 minutes early and decided not to wait for the shuttle bus with the other people, so she was about 100ft away when the guy started shooting. If she hadn't she would have been standing with the 3 women that were shot. As it were, she was good friends with the woman that died.

Dude you need to get your wife a CCW.

Thank god she's ok.

TGTIW 04-20-2010 10:39 AM

To be honest, even if there were someone there with a CCW, the whole incident happened so fast I don't think anyone could have reacted quick enough to do anything.

Sounds like maybe a good time to take a couple days off and just hang with the wife for while. Life is so short.

+1 to that. If I were in your shoes I would be pretty shaken, and I bet your wife is pretty shaken as well... scary.

I day or so may just be the tonic...what a relief she is ok.

only snipe could have pulled his CW fast enough to have stopped that guy.
Glad she's OK

Thanks, she's ok.
Just going through the stage of trying to rationalize it. She keeps thinking what if she would have waited for the shuttle.

Oh Haha 04-20-2010 01:01 PM

Whoa.

Time to get away for a few days and spend some time with her.

Count your blessings.

Perhaps.

One thing is for sure though- with no CCW holder present, we saw the result. :(

Really glad your wife is ok.

We really don't know that. The average person can get a pistol out of a IWB holster in under a second. That could be enough time if you're paying attention and act decisively.

That's the whole key- paying attention. If you are, you will often get several more seconds warning to get yourself prepared. Of course, sometimes there is no warning, and nothing can save you.

The real issue would have been if the 'person' had not stopped after 3...

Glad you and yours made it out okay.
