				Saw a Supermarine Spitfire today

Flying over Paine Field in Everett WA. He took it way up, made an Immelmann (sp?) turn, then brought it in. I think it's part of Paul Allen's flying museum collection.

I think these have the same engine as the Mustang, but the different props give them very unique sounds

Almost the same engine. Apart from the early Mustangs which used Allison engines and some experimental ones that used RR Merlins, the later Mustangs used Packard Merlins. Merlin engines built under RR license in the US by Packard.

The Packard Merlins were more reliabile and stronger in build than the RR Merlins. But you are correct it is the different propellors that cause them to sound different.

The earliest Spitfires had 2 bladed propellors, the last ones had 5 bladed proplellors with RR Griffon engines.

Awesome planes. I fly radio control and presently have a 65" wingspan Hawker Hurricane. I had a Spitfire but it expired.

The Spit in the video sounds an awful lot like a P-51D...to me anyway.

I see it has a 4 blade prop, so maybe it's the same prop as the Mustang. Beautiful plane, always have loved the look of the the 'eliptical' wing. |

RR Merlin V12 supercharged engine, the best piston engine in WWII. One of the best lookin' planes with it's elliptical wings.

Have seen quite a few Supermarine Spitfires at local air shows - it's great to see piston engine airplane "in front of" the sound

You can get into a decent plane, radio, engine and accessories for about $500. Cheap Chinese plane / gear for about $250. If you get the best equipment, plan on $1,000 plus. Mine is a Chinese plane with decent gear in it, I have about $650. tied up. ![]()

I've got a similarly sized P-51B (sig) mustang with an OS 120 Surpass II (pumped) engine in it. I'm working on working out the kinks on the engine but it is awesome in the air with that big 4 stroke. Not as loud as a YS but pretty darned nice.
