moving blows

'nuff said.

You never realize how much useless crap you have or how few friends you have, until it's time to move.

I've been in my current house for 15 years and don't ever plan to move again.

MotoSook 04-23-2010 02:53 PM

One should be allowed to just burn the old stuff in exchange for buying new stuff using a government credit .... Stimulus Mr. President.

Next time I move I will have a dumpster delivered to the house. Anything not essential gets tossed.

gr8fl4porsche 04-23-2010 02:56 PM

As the old saying goes,

War is hell and moving isn't any fun either.

Completely agree.

And all it does is get worse until you can afford to pay someone else to do it for you.

RWebb 04-23-2010 03:14 PM

it's really very simple:

1. put your tools back in the chest, close it up and roll onto the truck

2. throw away all your wife's crap: shoes, mementos, etc. - she will move the rest of her crap when she storms out

3. toss foam pad, sleeping bag and some clothes into your pack/duffle bag

4. unplug your laptop & close the lid; pick it up; pick up duffle bag - walk to truck & drive away

you're done

PorschePilot 04-23-2010 03:20 PM

My rule is that if you haven't worn it, touched it or thought about an item for 3 years or more, then its trash on moving day or spring cleaning day.

BRPORSCHE 04-23-2010 03:22 PM

I wish it was that easy Randy!

Simply astonishing how much *****e you can fit into a Toyota 4runner, and it didn't try to kill me! Moving from the third floor, to the third floor, while it's 90 degrees out just ain't fun.

Jagshund 04-23-2010 03:31 PM

I'm always amazed at how I can go paddling & survive for weeks on 3 dry bags' worth of food and equipment and yet our attic, crawl space and 1/4 of the basement are stuffed full of crap.

RWebb 04-23-2010 03:50 PM

good luck - I have a friend in Clearlake and grew up in Baton Crude, so I know how hellish it can be in that area.

Let me guess...Exxon? It's a popular transfer.;)

Tobra 04-23-2010 10:13 PM

I am moving my office next week, which really blows.

Jim Bremner 04-23-2010 11:25 PM

Two forklifts 1 20' truck 2 pick ups and 7 workers.

Forklifts showed up at 7:30 workers at 8 alarm, internet guys at 9

I just got home!

I'll finish up sunday?

I moved from a 2,500 sq ft to a 4,400 foot place!

Porsche-O-Phile 04-24-2010 04:36 AM

Yes it sucks, but it almost always results in things being better for you. There are reasons people put up with it.

A930Rocket 04-24-2010 05:24 AM

We've moved 7 times in 15 years. My wife has it down to a science.

Erakad 04-24-2010 06:35 AM

On my 11th move in last 23 yrs. At one point, was lucky to stay in the same house for 5 years, after that, not so lucky. At first it was exciting, now....like jogging home after a vasectomy. Heavy sigh.......heavy sigh......:(:(

+1

My home is where I intend to live the rest of my life. My perfect vacation is a couple weeks at home. ;)

No - he runs the "lab" that tries to figure out the performance of NASA Astronauts. Very touchy subject, since they more or less run NASA and don't like having cameras on them...

s_morrison57 04-24-2010 02:12 PM

its always better to move to a bigger place, you can spread the junk out that way. I have so much good junk it would kill me to move and part with it, same place for 12 years and don't plan on moving

Zeke 04-24-2010 05:20 PM

I moved 5 times in 3 years and I'm talking about a full house full of furniture and a garage full of junk and tools. I'm like the other posters than say, "I'm planted."

But, I wish I could move some stuff to the dumpster. I even have to rent a garage down the street for the overflow.

Evans, Marv 04-24-2010 09:41 PM

My wife & I recently moved from a small to a larger place. The larger place is just a full as the smaller place was. Course we did empty the two - 40 ft. storage units and the 20 ft. container we had stuff stored in. That was after throwing away a hefty amount too.

porsche4life 04-24-2010 10:50 PM

Tom's move wasn't made any easy by his woman I'm sure.... :p

Coulda saved yourself sooo much trouble man...

BRPORSCHE 04-24-2010 11:00 PM

I am laying in bed in pain. I am not as nimble as I used to be.

Porsche-O-Phile 04-25-2010 05:50 AM

It doesn't get any easier. But (I strongly believe this) it's better than paying someone. Doing it yourself might be tough, but it makes you stronger. I'm firmly opposed to paying someone to do something I can do myself - that goes for car repairs, home repairs, fixing stuff in general, building computers, web sites, you-name-it. I like keeping my money thanks.

What good is knowledge/experience/strength gained unless you can use it to realize some benefit (i.e. saving money) by it? If you're just going to pay people to deal with every obstacle in life, why bother learning anything?

Next time I move, I'm taking one, UNO car-load of stuff. Clothes, a laptop and a mountain bike. Possibly my tools. That's it. Everything else stays and gets rolled into the cost of selling the place. I ain't dealing with it again. Everything else is expendable and it's an excuse for new furniture, whatever at the new place. I doubt I'll even take my 911 honestly. I'm sick of being beholden to the crap we own.

Wife?

RWebb 04-25-2010 12:56 PM

he said that his wife stays and gets rolled into the cost of selling the place...

varmint 04-27-2010 06:49 AM

have moved a dumpster to within three point shot range of my balcony. makes moving much easier. truly disturbing how much crap i've collected.

Rick Lee 04-27-2010 07:46 AM

I just moved this past weekend into my new house about 17 miles down the road from the last one. Now I live equidistant between Joeaksa and Oddjob. Took me eight trips in Joe's truck over two weekends and one trip in a big Budget truck. My wife is a pack rat and a shopaholic. I think this move cured her of those ailments.

Aint that the truth. LOL. You find out who the real friends are when moving day comes around.

Just gonna leave all that stuff for the kids to sort through when you get carted off to the old folks home, then? ;)

cmccuist 04-27-2010 08:30 AM

I worked for Global Van Lines to put myself through college. When we move, I tell the wife to go shopping. I get my buddies together, and I can have a four bedroom house, packed, picked and delivered in one day (for a local move).

Takes a week if she helps.

Always rent as big a truck as you can get. If you make multiple trips with the small truck, you are killed on the mileage.

Option B is to rent a no milage trailer for your pick up truck. This reduces the number of trips, plus they are easier to load than the pickup bed. And they have some really big trailers.

Rick Lee 04-27-2010 09:13 AM

I reserved a truck with a liftgate, but they couldn't round one up for me. I knew I only needed one trip in that 15' truck at $.14 per mile. The rest I knew I could fit into Joe's truck. We still have some stuff to pack up, but the 993 and Mini can carry it all in a few more trips.

BRPORSCHE 04-27-2010 09:18 AM

I am finally done with four trips in a fully loaded expedition.

Wanna know a trick?

Don't go and buy lots of new furniture until the day you're moving. Otherwise, you've moved said furniture twice ;)

Porsche-O-Phile 04-27-2010 01:59 PM

I said that's what I'M taking. What she wants to take is her problem.

There are days when the "include with stuff to sell" idea holds certain appeal though, I have to admit...

vash 04-27-2010 02:06 PM

in san francisco, i lived with pack rats. the garage looked like hoarders dumped the schit they didnt want. total krap. if i didnt tackle it, nobody would. i ordered a dumpster, AND a clean up crew. i went thru everything. put the little bit that could be salvaged, and started dumping the rest. my room-mates came by, saw what i was doing, and pulled some stuff out and set it in the small "save pile" this pile got huge. it slowly got HUGE. the clean up crew came and took it all. now i have this big "saved" pile. come moving day..nobody revisited it. i had to order another clean up crew to toss it again. if i had a pistol, it would have been a shooting spree. living in SF, i had to put up with roommates. i moved with them..i painted the new place, and set it up. i quickly put my finances together and got the eff out of there.

I made no mention of whether the furniture was on frictionless casters, or pushed up or down inclined planes...so...

No. :p

RWebb 04-27-2010 03:23 PM

one could still calculate the minimum # ergs required based on elevational changes...
