Just finished welding some more steel targets

We have some 1/2"x 16 x 24 steel plates at work that were leftovers from a job we did over 10 yrs ago. I have been torching up into 8" steel plates and pepper popper targets during my lunch breaks. Just got done welding this batch up and I just tried out the pepper popper..... works great and I can even adjust it to drop with a .22 pistol hit. Going to slap some paint on them later today.

These things are great for IDPA practice and show hits clearly when gone over first with a shot of cheap white spray paint. So far no fragments have come back after shooting my first batch of plates (10-15 yards) over the last couple weeks with probably 500 rounds (both .22 and 9mm) and I have collected small pile of bullet noses laying in the grass directly below the hanging plates. All my targets are designed to hang such that they "should" direct ricochets towards the ground.

Next up will be some swingers and drop turners that will get cardboard silloeuttes stapled to them. The (2) poppers I made will have strings attached to them that when hit, will activate the swingers and drop turners.

Not bad for using free scrap metal.

The 1/2" mild plate was free (which is precisely why they are 1/2" )..... 3/8" mild or 5/16" Armor plate would be ideal, but the 1/2" will last forever provided they only get shot at with pistols.

I'd like to see how that plate would hold up to both 5.56mm M855 and XM193 at close range.

I don't recall what XM193 is for sure off the top of my head, but if it is 5.56, it probably would go thru it at close range or dent it severely. I will never know as I will only shoot pistols at close range steel.

I am going to bring home a chunk of approximately 12" sq x 3/4" thick mild steel when I think of it. I plan to hang it in front of a dirt mound at 100 yards similar to how my 8" plates hang. I doubt my AR15 will hurt it, but it may may booger the face up enough at point of impact that it would not be safe. I do know that my AR "drills" holes in 1/4 mild steel .22 spinner targets at fairly close range.

Easy.... I just get sidetracked easily by new hobbies. I guess you did not notice the unfinished cafe bike in the first pic. Shooting out the back door of the shop will probably taper off as winter sets in..... Maybe I will finally finish the cafe bike in time for spring.

My only neighbor is a relative.... she has known that I am crazy for years and while she may not "enjoy" my nightly 10 minute practice sessions, I am the first person she calls when she has a varmint problem. Anyone else within the sound of the gunshots is used to other neighbors shooting on occasion.

XM193 is milspec 5.56mm 55gr FMJBT. It will hit about 3300fps from a 20" bbl or about 3100 from a 16" carbine.

My dad bought some steel spinner targets at Cabela's that were rated for up to .44 mag. I hit it with my M4 and it really messed it up. Didn't cut all the way through, but put deep dents in it.

The gun show? ...... (probably if I remember)

If small pistol primers become available again soon, I will be looking to buy a reloader possibly at the show. You are more than welcome to stop by my place afterwards and launch some handgun ammo at my new targets. (I am about 15 miles west/southwest of Bowling Green)

It is a standard gun show with a bunch of vendors and collectors selling their goods. Last time I went earlier in the year, it was held in Maumee Ohio at the Lucas County Rec Center and it was PACKED with people looking for a ammo and guns in light of the recent political climate change.

A link to the show
Maumee Valley Gun Collectors Association

Let me know if you decide to attend, we could have a little afternoon Pelican shooting and BS session at my place sometime that weekend.

Nice. The poppers are neat. You'll find with the hangars that frags usually deflect to the ground. Falling targets are more likely to produce a 'pop-up' and end up down your shirt (ask me how I know). For anything rifle, (other than .22) you need to have the plates hardened. Don't you have a friend with a water-jet cutter?

Oh..... I know the torch cut job looks like azz. I cut these during my lunch break at work wearing nice clothes.... If I had been wearing some old coveralls and some decent long welding gloves, I could have done a bit better of a job, but it was free and they work great. If I was going to make a whole bunch to sell, I would simply pay to have the parts burned out or laser cut to size from a local steel supplier.

Nice work Tim. It looks lots of fun. Make sure you use safety glasses when shooting though.
