This is what I imagine the "end of days" would look like.

Thanks for posting the link, been looking for a good source lately but could not find one.

I'll never get over photos of volcanoes with lightning shooting out of it. Just incredible.

That lightning is so intrinsically bad-ass... I want to see that in person..

it is coming up thru snow or ice fields

very dramatic - I'm glad the photographer lived to bring those back

St. Helens must have been awe inspiring too.

yes, the lightning is caused by electrical buildup on the particles (not sure of the exact mechanism - I read about it when I went thru St. Helens but forgot in the ensuing 30 years) -- I'd bet it can be had by a Google search..

The lightening is filmed using time lapse, so you wouldn't see as much with the naked eye but it is definitely wild.

I wonder if this volcano is big enough to cause temporary volcanic winter? I'm guessing probably not .......

When one next door to it went off in the 1700's it did, according to Ben Franklin. (at least, according to a news report i saw yesterday)

Last time this volcano erupted it lasted over a year (up to 2 years, depending on source)

sammy - that would depend on the particle size distribution of the ejecta, the ht. it rises to and the volume - maybe other things too

I dunno if those factors have been met - St. Helens had a very definite effect not just that year, but also the next year. Of course, the top 1,400 ft. of the mountain blew off in that one.

I'm working on a Sci Fi story about an eruption that spews out material of a new atomic nature - ultra high atomic weight material capable of creating its on gravitation field. The particles assemble and create a floating spheres - floating about 100 feet or so above the ground. These spheres end up floating to different parts of the planet. One in Europe, a few in China, several in Africa and so forth. Unfortunately the volcano has also brought about a volcanic winter but the sphere provide heat and periodic bursts of lightening that can be very predictable and of consistent voltage and amperes. These gifts from the Earth usher in a new age of man - free, accessible warmth and electricity...but at a price.
