Keep it or sell it?

2007 Ford Taurus with 90K. It is used as a daily driver.

Keep it, or sell it before it hits 100K miles and looses nearly all of its value?

The car has not problems, just BORING.

It has been very, very reliable, but I am concerned about what I may spend in the next 60-80K miles.

Thoughts/advice?

Keep it. Buying anything else will cost you more. Drive it into the ground, then buy something nice when it quits.

Honestly I think a 2007 Taurus lost at least half its value the minute it left the dealership. Drive it until the cost of a major repair hits 1/2 of its value or something, than dump it.

pwd72s 04-25-2010 06:35 PM

Yep, drive your money out of it. Why not?

ODDJOB UNO 04-25-2010 06:47 PM

i would restore it and put spinners on it.

or

i would put a WING on it and race it

or i would just drive it until the wheels fell off, kinda of like a rolling long term useage car and driver test. cheap insurance, cheap plates and tags and highly coveted by the demolition derby guys, upon its demise.

I know you guys are right, but can I stand the boredom?

Paint it yellow and get free parking?

Oh Haha 04-26-2010 12:34 PM

I know what you mean.
I sold my boring, 4 door Grand Prix to a family friend yesterday. I now NEED to find another dd.

Tempting as it is to go boring again(easy to blend in with traffic) I think I'll get something a bit more snazzier this time.;)

How can a 3 year old semi-luxo car be considered worthless?

gprsh924 04-26-2010 03:34 PM

It's worth like $8k, but there are a ton of them and they are incredibly boring. No enthusiast market to drive up demand.

But its almost always cheaper to keep an old car on the road than it is to get something newer. It has been less expensive keeping the 924S and 525i combined running over the last 6 years than it would have been for my parents to buy another car for me to drive.

NO LIFT 04-27-2010 05:17 AM

If I could get $8K for it, I'd have to reconsider my inclination to keep it!

It would be just like me to sell it, I just put new front brakes & rotors on it, changed the coolant, trans fluid & filter! Bought 6 spark plugs too, but haven't put them in yet.

Any advice for the best way to sell it? Autotrader.com?

Craigslist, no brainer

Hey - at least it's not a Camry! (Camrys are, IMHO, the most anemic, most perfectly boring cars on the planet!)

Drive it with more emotion. Even FWD pigs like a Tarus can be made to oversteer in corners, given the right amount of, ahem, influence.

My Subaru Legacy was a rather boring car, until I started to practice my late apex techniques when I came across an on or off ramp! BTW: I drove that thing to nearly 200k miles - and after some time, it was fun to see how reliable that car was despite all the abuse it took! However, I doubt that a Tarus can last that long without any major issues...

Disclaimer: I am not advocating breaking the law -- but some spirited driving around on-ramps within the bounds of the law can wake up any boring car.

My current daily is a '95 Taurus wagon. White. It's perfect for hauling things and I don't care if anything happens to it. It's quite possibly the ugliest car in Illinois.

I do drive it with emotion! I don't abuse it, but I definitely push it. The secret is significantly lower tire pressure in the rear to get the understeer to go away...

I guess I'll give Craig's list a try (heard of it, but never even been on the site before).
