Almost hit 2 horses on the way home tonight!

My wife, kids and I were driving home tonight from my father-in-law's 71st b-day party. I was doing 55 down our country road about 4 miles from our house when out of the corner I saw a dark horse like silhouette what appeared to be moving against the very dark rural landscape. I thought maybe it was just my vision seeing things but just incase I covered the brakes and just started to apply them at about 20% when all of a sudden another horse jumps right out in front of me. I swerved and nailed the brakes hard which instantly woke everybody up in the minivan. I was able to miss the horse by about a foot and was able to stop. I ended up about 20 feet past the horses. Everything happened so fast it was almost like a movie.

My wife used our dog's lead to wrap it around the horse's neck and started to lead them to the farm my wife suspected they came from. I called 911 to get assistance just in case they decided to run. We eventually woke the people who own the farm and we were able to get them back in the lot. The horses busted through the wood fence and while I was helping the guy nail the boards back on he mentioned that it wasn't the first time they got out. I then told home about almost hitting the dam things at 55 MPH.

Driving away I couldn't help but think what would of happened sending 1000 lbs of horse through a windshield at 55 MPH.

The black horse I saw was about 16.4 hands and the other maybe about 15.2 hands. That would have definitely ruined my night hitting any one of them.

I am glad to be home on our farm with our horses resting in their pastures.

Speedy

Happens with cattle too...driving out west, if you see signs saying "free range"...that means no fences. Don't even think about outdriving your lights...

Glad you were paying attention!

Suddenly finding yourself sharing the road with large critters is not a restful moment. I have had a number of close encounters of the hoofed kind and they are all etched into my brain for replay when I'm thinking of driving too fast in the fog, snow or dark.

My wife has 4 horses. I switched all our pasture over to Electrobraid starting about 15 years ago. No more horses out. (no affiliation with this product, I just bought the stuff. It works.)

Keep your family safe.
