I have been dreading this for a long time.

Last night was the night I had to let my best friend of 12 years go. He was a black lab cocker mix and after years of all sorts of medical issues he has gone to the big dog park in the sky. It is amazing how attached you can get to an animal. In the last 9 months he went from 45 pounds down to 32 and was just a bag of bones. Finally they found a tumor in his abdomen. What gets me is the vet asked if I wanted to do surgery on him to remove it.......best to let him go instead of suffering any more. RIP Watson

Sorry for your loss Kevin. It is never easy.

Geronimo '74 04-27-2010 03:01 AM

Sorry to hear you lost a friend.

RIP Watson.

mca 04-27-2010 03:18 AM

Very sorry for you loss. Went through it 1 1/2 years ago. Dogs are amazing friends - truly unconditional love.

My dad is a vet. Putting an animal down is excruciating. I don't envy that part of his job.

Best wishes.

quaz 04-27-2010 04:36 AM

Thanks for the kind words. I knew I was attached to the little monster, but didn't realize how attached I was. They really become part of your life and family. When we let him go the doctor was nice enough to make a house call and we had all his family around him. Someday that is how I want to go.

sc_rufctr 04-27-2010 04:42 AM

That's how it is. They come into your life and steal your heart.
Try not to let it get you down.

You have my condolences.

billybek 04-27-2010 04:43 AM

Sorry to hear about your buddy.
I have to tell you the picture of him between the car seats made me laugh out loud.
He was a good looking guy.
Hard decisions are often the best ones to make.

Very Sorry, he looked like a great friend

widgeon13 04-27-2010 05:03 AM

Sorry to hear this very sad news. Great pictures and I'm certain wonderful memories.

Our golden is actually on the way to the vet for some growth removed and the house is just way too quiet.

monoflo 04-27-2010 05:05 AM

canines

Dogs --it don't get any better than that.

I think good dogs have the best traits of people --thats why we love em. I have two aging labs - and have always loved all dogs.

We owe em respect and a comfortable exit - I figure they live shorter lives so we can have more of em in ours. Dog and god have the same letters for a reason

And any place dogs go in the after life thats where I want to go!

So hang in there --your buddy would want you to

I'm sorry you had to let him go. Such a painful thing to do. He was a cute little guy! I've heard that heaven is where our dogs go to wait for us, so you just might meet up again.

Rot 911 04-27-2010 05:33 AM

Good bye Watson. Your family will miss you!

jyl 04-27-2010 06:34 AM

He looks like a wonderful dog. He had a great life with you, he was loved, and you did the right thing by him at the end.

VINMAN 04-27-2010 06:45 AM

So sorry Kevin. RIP Watson:(

quaz 04-27-2010 06:49 AM

Thanks so much for all the kind words. Talking to people and hearing other great stories seems to be helping me the most. Watson was like my shadow for so many years. Where ever I went he went and all my friends new him well. The picture in the car is what he liked to do best. Dog after my own heart, drive with the windows down and the wind in your face!

m21sniper 04-27-2010 07:18 AM

If there is a heaven i'm sure your dog is playing with my dog at this very moment.

Rikao4 04-27-2010 08:01 AM

rest assured.
Watson is giving Faust and Pascha a run for the bones..
never a dog that let me down..

Wow Rika you have a good memory!

gatotom 04-27-2010 08:14 AM

Sorry for your loss, but you did the right thing.

Don't know where you live in milwaukee but I grew up there and when I needed time by myself I would go take a strool down by the lake.

Last yr I put my beloved Cedar down, a yellow lab with bone marrow cancer at 8yrs 6 months. Thought I would not get another dog but 6 months later Lady came into our lives, she is a incredable sweetheart.

Sorry, we lost our family pooch of 13 years just a few months ago, I still come home and start to walk outside to see her. They become such an important part of your family, my heart goes out to you.

I'm so very sorry. I just lost my dog recently too and it was so tough; I just wasn't ready for it. I feel for you. He was beautiful and surely loved. Rest in peace, Watson.

kach22i 04-27-2010 09:08 AM

Sorry for your loss quaz.

vash 04-27-2010 09:13 AM

great looking pup! he will be missed.

madcorgi 04-27-2010 10:16 AM

RIP Watson. I'm so sorry.

Dogs mean so much to us--they truly become a huge part of our lives. My wife and I find that they make us laugh more than anything else. I'm sure Watson was the same way--he had that great gleam in his eye.

After a normal period of grief, go out and find another. You'll never replace Watson, but you'll start the whole wonderful process over again with a new companion.

Just don't get corgis!

Terry

pwd72s 04-27-2010 10:36 AM

Tom, That's it. Pets leave us...we cry, we miss them terribly. But the time comes to open your heart and home to another. The pets gone would appreciate this.

Superman 04-27-2010 10:50 AM

I think in some ways we mourn the loss of our loyal, faithful dogs more than our friends and family members. Why? Well, it's because they outperform the humans in our lives.

A930Rocket 04-27-2010 10:51 AM

Sorry for your loss. He looks like great a great dog!

I'll never forget our first dog, well the first dog I remember, growing up. I was 21 and cried like a baby seeing her unable to get up one day. She had a form of lukemiea (sp?). We had to put her down after 13 years. Lucy was the best...

quaz 04-27-2010 01:53 PM

It is amazing to me how dog people can see a happy dog. Watson was always a happy dog and lead a very spoiled life. Right up to the last minutes he was happy. Maybe in pain, but happy. I agree with everyone here, they are as difficult to lose as a person because they are so loyal and never betray your trust. To everyone else who has recently lost a dog I feel for you and just know Watson is now with them playing endlessly. Hopefully there is a blue Frisbee up there for him......

Don Plumley 04-27-2010 03:19 PM

Condolences on your loss, and kudos for taking good care of a loyal friend.

My dog is laying on the couch across from my desk, snoring. I strive to be the person my dog thinks I am...

lm6y 04-27-2010 06:54 PM

Sorry to hear this Kevin. I know it doesn't seem like it now, but you gave him the best gift you possibly could have. How many of us will be so lucky as to go out in relative comfort, where we want to be, surrounded by the people that love us most.

He will be in good company when he gets there. A lot of Pelican buddies will be welcoming him, and showing him the ropes.

Mo_Gearhead dropped this on me when I lost Reggie on new years eve. You can't read it with a dry eye, but that only shows that you did the right thing.

RIP Watson...

Treat me gently beloved master, and I will love you with a full and happy heart.

Show me patience and I will learn to understand your every word and action. I will even protect you with my life if yours is at any time in danger.

Speak to me often, for your voice is music to my ears and I await even the simple sound of your footsteps, knowing soon you will be near.

Shelter me from nature's bitter cold and wet and I in return will warm your feet beside the hearth. Or, if life should be unkind, I will find a place of comfort for us both, for your pleasure is my dearest wish.

Play with me, for I seek your challenge just as I seek to please you. I will follow a thrown ball to the ends of the earth if you choose it and I will swim the seven seas just to see you smile.

Fill my bowl with fresh water and see that I'm well fed, for I cannot speak to ask you and am completely at your mercy. But my trust in you is so complete, I know you will never do me wrong.

And beloved master, when I grow old and the time comes to say farewell, hold me gently in your arms and I will go without a whimper. For with you I am safe and secure. A dog who gave love and received it with a grateful heart.

I just finished this book. VERY much enjoyed it. Wonderful peek into the emotional life of a dog (theoretical).
