wall mounting an LCD
 

I live in an apartment and thus have no access to the breaker box. Is there anyway I can just run an extension chord through the wall and out a hole in the bottom by the outlet? I am trying to make this look as "clean" as possible.

Except I will just have on box and not two. No power supply up that high.

Edit: Well way to shoot myself in the foot. I see that Home Depot sells wall plates with HDMI and component cable connections. Now if I could only figure out the power supply!

be careful about making holes in the walls in an apartment...they don't typically like that. making one hole behind the TV is fine...but it might look like crap on the other side where the wire comes out to plug into the socket.

We could always do some custom wiring and put another outlet in the wall...again, you might want to see what the mgmt. says before you make too many holes.

but, I must confess..
TV in Bedroom mounted high in bedroom bookcase..(built-in)
no outlet..= hole in bookcase leading into laundry room and outlet..
works great..

That was last years solution. Eats up valueable floorspace.

Management is fine with the wall mounting, but not sure how many wall plates I can install.

If you're dealing with an interior, wood-studded wall, you can use one of these behind the TV - DVFR2W Recessed 2 Gang Wall Box . I've used them behind my TV and equipment rack and they work well.

If you have an existing 120V outlet on the wall below where you want the TV, you can install the new box in the same stud cavity and tie in the new 120V outlet to the outlet below. Just be sure and use proper wiring (Romex, 14 or 12 AWG) between the two.

Outside wall or interior? Common wall (i.e., backs up to neighbor)? I did just what you're proposing in one of the girl's room.

This is the correct way to do it. Running an extension cord inside or through a wall is in violation of the NEC. If your faulty installation burns the place down, you can be liable for the whole shootin' match.

Flexible cords may not be attached to building surfaces (except for one connection for a suitable tension take-up device) or used under carpeting or inside walls, floors, or ceilings or run through holes in walls , floors, or ceilings. NEC ART. 400-8


If you only want to make one hole, then get a combo low voltage box which has two separate compartments for 110 & low-voltage (cable/HDMI, etc.)...you can feed the 110 to this box from the box below or from the opposite room. You must use suitable wire as specified by the NEC or your local code (e.g. 15a breaker = 14awg, 20a breaker = 12awg).

I've got the add-a-box's and romex to do this....I would in no way ever help you run an extension cord, but we can certainly add a power outlet and HDMI/digital audio connection in a new box.

I guess my question is where are you going to put your cable/sat. receiver...the other room? Are you planning to hook up any surround sound equipment? You might consider buying a small TV console...my buddy owns a furniture store and we can get you hooked up for less than $200...then you got spaces to put your PS3, Xbox, Wii, Stereo receiver, cable box and still keep a clean look.... sorta like my media room :D

Heck, if they'll let you cut holes in the walls...might as well run some surround sound wiring thru the ceiling for your rear channels ;) I'll make you a heck of a deal on a Harmon Kardon receiver....I'm thinking a BIG Onkyo THX is in my future.

I am thinking this is the idea we will go with. Just a small table below the TV to hold all of the gear. I'll take a pic on my lunch break of the new mount.
