It looks to me like the guy shoved the gun in the cop's face and pulled the trigger, but had the safety on/forgot to cock the gun/ whatever. then the gun goes back in the window, comes back out, and finally fires. Whatever happened, it was very lucky for the cop.

One change of underwear after that. No wonder police are edgy when they approach a car.

The wierd/crazy thing is the driver appeared to be just another loser drunk on his way home. Not aggresive or anything, then suddenly out with the gun.

I read where the revolver fired on a spent cartridge, if that's the right term. The cop was one lucky SOB and the dirt bag had it coming.

Tough night is right.

Thankfully the Officer got to go home.

13 months on the job.

Seems this was an inevitable end for the assailant.

I don't think I've ever had a cop be anything but professional when getting pulled over. A few times they may have been a little more on edge than others, but I do my best to try to make them at ease.

They have a crappy job. Most of the time, it's not only thankless, but they are often disparaged even on this board. Often, they are dealing with the worst of society. They can be killed stopping someone to give them a warning and do their job.

I don't like to get tickets, but I very much respect the cops that give them to me. I'm sure there are bad apples. In any group there always will be. Fortunately, I've never run into one.

Exactly right, "no wonder police are edgy when they approach a car."

That was something. Very professional... Well done on the cops actions.

If someone is willing to draw and shoot at a Police officer they have to expect this kind of response.
What else would this driver be capable of?
Note how the cop shot through the back window aiming for the back of the drivers seat.
That action was pure instinct. That instinct would be very difficult to override in such a situation.
A real attempt was made on his life. When that happens all bets are off.

I bet some people would argue that the police man shouldn't have fired at all.
...Because the driver fired once and was driving away.

Funny thing is those same people have never been and probably never will be in a situation like this because of brave cops like this.

Oh yeah, you know they're coming...but then we'll have to educate them on the "fleeing felon" rule.

Apologies but being an Australian I'm not aware of this "rule".

Does it mean he became a "felon" as soon as he fired at the cop?

Yes...or if he's a known (wanted) felon.

In Common law, the Fleeing Felon Rule permits the use of force, including deadly force, against an individual who is suspected of a felony and is in clear flight. Force may be used by the victim, bystanders, or police officers. In some jurisprudence failure to use such force was a misdemeanor which could result in a fine or imprisonment. According to David Caplan "Immediate stopping of the fleeing felon, whether actually or presumably dangerous, was deemed absolutely necessary for the security of the people in a free state, and for maintaining the "public security." ... " Indeed, it has been said that the social policy of the common law in this matter was not only to threaten dangerous felons and hence deter them, but was also to induce them to "surrender peaceably" if they dared commit inherently dangerous felonies, rather than allow them to "escape trial for their crimes."
