Aprilia RSV Mille
Tell me about 'em. Have a line on one with a few cosmetic issues but seems sound mechanically.
What kind of pain am I in for? I really, really liked the Falco that I test rode (for 1/2 hr). This is basically a peppier motor and more agonizing ergos. Parts availability for these things? Maintenance nightmares?

its a rotax engine, unless it is pretty new (2009?). parts shouldn't be a problem, except for aprilia specific stuff like the tupperware.

I had a 2001. Great bike but it desperately needed a slipper clutch as any throttle transition would upset balance and line into corners. I had it for ~ 16 months and the bike was dead reliable. Great sound from the exhaust, poor mpg, fantastic suspension (mine was the R), ok brakes (front rotors prone to warping). I have not ridden many other twins but engine vibs through the bars were a deal breaker for me. I changed out the grips and my hands would still go numb after 30 minutes. Riding position was surprisingly comfortable given what the bike is.

Dammit, you guys are supposed to talk me OUT of this. Now I'm going to have to sell a 1911 or two. Humph.

well, what did you expect? from my experience with 90 degree twins, the torque will seal the deal. there will be some vibration, as stated before, but what a sound and feel.
edit: forgot this was a 60 degree twin, but the torque statement still applies.

Parts have gotten better for Aprilia since Piaggio bought them. Still can be some issues. If you're DIY, then AF1 Racing has you covered, and there is a very active online community there. Stonking motor on these - better than most Ducs imho. Can be some issues with electrics, and the newer ones of course are all electronics. Older ones are rather bulletproof, at least the motors. A lot of performance for not a lot of money.
If you want serious giggles, check out a Tuono. About the same engine in a naked bike. Hooligan central... |

The one I'm looking at is a pre-Tuono bike. 2000.5, I think.

Excellent. Or not, depending on your point of view.

Remember that the market is very soft for these bikes - especially in the earlier years like mine. Not uncommon for these to languish on the for-sale boards for a long long time so don't be afraid to test the waters with a low ball (but not offensive) offer.

The price is already lower than I'm normally comfortable with.

that is the beauty of a bike like ducati or aprilia, they may have some use, but they usually aren't as thrashed on as the japanese stuff. there are exceptions, of course, tl1000r's are usually in decent shape.

I was just starting to enjoy mine when I destroyed it in a firey crash at Motorsports Park Hastings.
A buddy of mine just got one this season and has been documenting it on his web site Penny Pasta 3, Viva la Mille! | K3 Chris Onwiler | Trackdaymag If you seach back to the first PP article, he covers getting my brand new sharkskins for a screaming deal. Also A "R" with the Ohlins and forged OZ wheels is a easy $3k for just those components when parting it out after you destroy it at the track. ;D
