Anyone Recommend a hotel in Chelsea, NYC?

I have to go to NYC next Tues/Wed for some work and the place I'm working is in the same building as the Chelsea Market.

Does anyone recommend a hotel in the area? Around 10th Avenue and 15-16th street. Thanks! I looked at the Standard Hotel, the Maritime, and the Gansevoort. All seem nice but I'm wondering if there's some cool PPOT secret hotel that would be just as cool with a little less $$$. Thanks!

"Owing to its long list of famous guests and residents, the hotel has an ornate history, both as a birth place of creative modern art and home of bad behavior. Bob Dylan composed songs while staying at the Chelsea, and poets Allen Ginsberg and Gregory Corso chose it as a place for philosophical and intellectual exchange. It is also known as the place where the writer Dylan Thomas died of alcohol poisoning on in 1953, and where Sid Vicious of the Sex Pistols may have stabbed his girlfriend, Nancy Spungen, to death on October 12, 1978." Porsche friends (so you know they are cool..) have stayed at the Cosmopolitan Hotel on W. Broadway in Tribeca. Cheap and cheap. Just an evening walk or cab ride away. The Odeon is always good for a night-cap.

I gave up trying to find a hotel in lower NYC. I often have to visit the Union Square area. I started using the boutique Affina chain. Several hotels in NYC but they are further north. I have stayed in the Shelburne & the 50. Both were very good & not crazy money.

Are you going to track some Leonard Cohen covers? If so you pretty much have to stay at the Chelsea Hotel. Who's going to be your Janis stand-in?

				Check out ...

The Standard is perfect for you, very close to where you have to work and right in the heart of a completely rejuvenated neighborhood. You would have a hard time finding a hooker of any persuasion, in fact anything illegal in that area now. Lots of good restaurants and bars in the area.

Yeah, The Standard is the exhibitionist place on the new greenway that used to be an elevated train platform in the meatpacking district. Very cool use of space, (the walkway, not the hotel), you can see it in the picture above.

You never want to pay for trendiness in a hotel, or anything else IMO. The Standard is going to have a large *trendy tax* until it's time is up as the new place. My buddy, (and former employer), owns the Maritime and I still would not stay there unless I got a free room. I've done incredibly well on priceline dot com for NYC hotel rooms. Give it a shot, you can pick the neighborhood and level of fancy, etc... |
