Goin' Fishin' ... Deep Sea Fishin'
So, what started out as a watercooler conversation at work recently took a dive on the serious side. Last week me and a buddy plopped down the cash to reserve a charter boat in on the Jersey shore for a full day of wreck fishing.
I have no idea whatsoever what I'm getting myself into as I've never fished saltwater. We are keeping the group small; 7-10 people and hit the water on the 19th of June. I am really looking forward to this and would like to hear stories, suggestions and the like from those of you who have sank a lure into the great Atlantic!

Suggestion... No matter what you may or may not forget, DO NOT FORGET MOTION SICKNESS MEDS.
I never got sick before then one time I did, NOT FUN, frggin horrible. It's not when you're moving, it's when you stop. Good luck, have fun, and let us know the whopper you catch!!

maybe 1st ride should be for bluefish?
you won't have to travel far and the boat doesn't stop cruising good bluefishing will have all your friends hopped up and partying while wreck fishing will probably have 1/2 of them sick

+1 on the seasickness meds. And make sure you take them about an hour before you leave--waiting til you feel sick is hopeless. I spent yesterday fishing on this side of the continent and puked all day.
Warning: it's highly addictive, puke or not. |

My college buds were hard core into fishing, and I use to go with them all the time. Its great when the fishes are bitting and being caught. Its the waiting for them bastards to bite with the boat going ******* up and down looking at the end of your lline in the water is when I get sick. Then, time to feed the fish. do not eat breakfast with lots of fried stuff or oil. Bring a rag and stuff it in you pocket to wipe the slime off your hands. The last few times I went, I slip the the deck hand $20 once we got going. He did all our dirty work like pulling the hooks or untangle lines. for 20 bucks, he will do the yelling at the other for you.
One more very importing thing. When it come time to feed the fish, make sure you DO IT overboard and not in the restroom. the deck hand has to clean it at the end of the day. He knows who did it. somehow, they always know. Try not to stand down wind from anyone who's colorless in the face. You will be slap by ralph. How me how I know. good luck and let us know how it goes. Jeff |

I was born and raised in Cape May County NJ. I guess my first question is you chartered a boat for wreck fishing or Off Shore Canyon fishing? Where in NJ is the boat leaving from?
If you are wreck fishing June is a pretty good time. You stand the chance of running into Strippers, awesome eating fishing. Blue fish, Great fight, Flounder, bass and tautog all good eats. If you are heading off shore Tuna will be starting to run as well as Mako and blue shark. Any time you are on the water the weather can change at the drop of a hat but this time of year can change often. Take a duffel bag with a change of warm and cold weather clothes and a rain coat. You may quite possibly have sun, rain, wind and seas. Take sea sick meds 1 hour before you leave the dock. Try to stay away from Dramamine as it will make you drowsy. See your Gen Phys and get a scrip. If you do start to feel sick do not go inside and do not go to the back of the boat Both will make symptoms worse. Move to the middle of the boat either side or all the forward to the bow. Look straight out at the horizon. Tight lines. |

Check out sportfisherman.com. go to New Jersey fishing reports. This will give you a good idea of what is running. a recent report out of Brigantine showed two strippers @ 18 and 19 lbs. Theres a few charter boats from around AC checking in.
