Just rock back and forth & mumble to yourself a lot while you're waiting. They'll escort you right out of the building.

tell them you're a detail fanatic when interviewed and nobody will want you

you may need more than a doc note if you tell them you're nuts

I hope it's not for fed court

After a year of delays I did jury duty Tues this week. Didn't get selected and we were dismissed by 11:00 am. Only once was I in a jury candidate pool but then too got tossed by the defense in short order. I'm kinda hoping to make a jury some day...looks interesting.

Don't you work for the state tho?

My folks both drew out recently... Neither had to sit thankfully.... But its tough sense they own their own business...

I reported for jury duty once.
I snapped, asked an attorney if he got his law degree from the Bob Marley school of law, paid my $400 contempt fine and went on my merry way.

I was called once in CT, sat there from 8 to 5 during voir dire for the entire day, never questioned and then was dismissed at the end of the day.

I was selected for jury duty years ago and the jury picked me as the jury foreman. It was a learning experience and a pain in the azz. I am glad that I did my part but never want to do it again. I was surprised at how many supposedly educated people could not look at things objectively. Follow what the law says not your emotions.....I would not want to have my future in the hands of a jury.

I did a two week jury on a home invasion double execution. Let me tell you if I'm ever charged with a crime, I'll go for a jury trial. There are an awful lot of stupid people out there. We convicted, but it took days, even with figerprints, shoe prints, DNA, the works.

I've been picked twice, both felony cases. I figure as a US citizen, it's my duty so I don't b!tch about it, I just do it.

I didn't really find my fellow jurors stupid as much as I found them scared to make a decision. The last case I was the jury foreman and I had to connect all the dots the prosecutors laid out for the other jurors to understand. Too many jurors get hung up on reasonable doubt.

I certainly don't object to the idea of jury duty. But the way it's handled in some areas is just outrageous. I've told my tale here before and because of it, I hope to NEVER EVER be called again, if that's the way it's going to work. Though the fed. dist. court in Alexandria, VA is way more hardcore than most others.

I sort of agree...

My office overhead clips along at $10,000/week whether I'm working or not. A two week stint at jury duty will cost me $20,000 PLUS two weeks of lost income.

Also, if the judge has a legal right to issue the jury a "directed verdict" and he also has the authority to "set aside" a juries verdict then the whole process is a bit of a charade.

Get pocket sized copies of the constitution...start handing them out in the Jury room. You'll soon be out of there...

JNOV's are pretty rare...especially in criminal cases.
I moved for a DV once in a criminal defense case at the close of the prosecution's case as they had failed to prove a key element of the crime. Never even addressed it. Judge denied DV motion. I then had a decision on whether or not to present my defense case. I rested without putting on a defense to prevent prosecution from the chance to revisit the ommitted evidence in rebuttal. Talk about making your milk dry up.

Judge still denied second motion for DV but was forced to give a jury instruction on elements of crime and duty of the prosecution to prove every element. Jury ended up acquitting on that basis.
