OIL RECOMMENDATION 85-928S, 80k
Can anyone give me a good recommendation for oil for my 1985 928S with 80k.
Brand and weight apprecialted. I am in NY and the summers get warm. The other posts I have read get very involved. I am ok with spending a little more for synthetic if it is worth it. |
What are you using the car for? Daily driver, weekend toy, track toy? All year round, or just a fair weather car?

Prolly a 5W-30 - Certified Labs STRATA XTREME (can't buy on-line or in stores); have to qualify to get it. Absolutley the best oil available at any price.

I happen to like Swepco 306. It's available in 5W30 and 15W40. Lubey can tell you what weight is best.
Also have an '85 928.... for what it's worth. JR |
As you probably already know, the oil filter you use is very important, too.

Brad Penn, Penn Grade 1. 10w30 if you don't mind 1 BAR at idle, or 15w40 if you do.
I use it in my '83 928. |
85 928s are subject to cam pitting, just like a 911. You need a high ZDDP oil like Brad Penn, Valvoline VR1, Redline or Royal Purple. I run 20/50, factory suggests 10/40.
Rennlist has an excellent 928 forum BTW. There is also a good one here where they would be happy to help you. I also run an 85 928 in NY. Have fun, and join the 928 Owner's Club. They do stuff. |

5W-30 may work for certain applications, but I would hate to put my 944S2 through its paces on the track on a hot summer day with that thin an oil. OTOH, 15W-50 (which I use) may be too thick an oil for the winter months, if that car's a Daily Driver.
That's why it is important to know what the car is to be used for. -Z |
Considering the Cam pitting issue, look for an oil that is not API CJ-4, they have reduced ZDDP levels.
