I need some automotive( porsche related)/financial/life advice.
Where do I start??. I want a 930. I am in the right place in my life to pull this off.
As much as I dont want to, I think I am going to flip my 944 turbo s. No matter what Sniper thinks, the only water that belongs in a Porsche , is in the windshield washer bottle. I basically stole it, it is beautiful, and the proceeds will take a nice chunk out of the purchase price of a 930. I already have a 930, well, a 76 euro turbo carrera, my dream car. 33k on the clock, but it needs a total resto. motor/trans/paint/sus/interior etc... I also own this car with a partner, and I would have to buy him out, not really a problem , we have discussed it before. When I build the 76 I wanted to do a full blown 100 point perfect resto. I have a pretty full plate in life right now, and I don't even know if I could pull this off in less than 3 years. I have always pictured this car as a garage queen, and in the past when I have restored a car, I hated driving it , was always worried about scratches , damage theft . etc... I really want a modded daily driver quality 78 and up 930 for me to take road trips in with my son( he loves boost), drive to work on nice days, the occasional auto x etc... Option # 1. After flipping my 952, and buying out my partner, I would probably have about 7k to start the restoration on the 76. I figure, It will cost me 20k, and probably 2-3 years worth of spare weekends and nights to pull this off. I would do it all myslelf, except for final body prep and paint. and machine work on the motor. This will be the more expensive route, and also robs quality time with my family. Or option # 2, flip 952, borrow a small ammount of money , write check, and drive home my new less than perfect 930. Option # 3 , sell 952, sell 76 , write a check for my new less than perfect 930. No money out of pocket no time missed with the family , and two less cars in the fleet ( my lady likes this option the best), but I have to give up my dream car. I was kind of saving the 76 for a retirement restoration project. I love the early turbo's, think they will be worth a fortune in the not to distant future, and are just all around old school Porsche cool. I would hate to give this car up. My partner on the car is ok either way. He would gladly sell me the car, sell the car outright, or he is also happy to just let it sit and appreciate There is always option # 4 where I could just do the mechanicals on the 76 , and a quickie driver quality restoration. Boy, I have been going over this in my mind for weeks now, just cannot make up my mind. what would you do? Sorry for the long post

I suggest selling the 951 and doing a quickie driver resto of the 76 and save the concourse resto for retirement..

If you wanted to buy one complete, in any condition, now is the time. There are a lot on the market and prices are great!

Option 3.
A 951 is fast, but not my cup of tea. There is more to life than 'fast'. A '76 930 is a very cool car, but, to drive, probably not that great with a 4-speed and the boost lag. In stock form, it is going to be a car that sits. I would say, make your lady happy, cut your losses (or lock in your gains) on the '76, enjoy your family time and sell the 951. Buy a lightly modded '89 930 with a 5-speed and some minor mods (K27) and enjoy driving it and working on it w/ son. A '76 is not so rare that you won't be able to find one if you just look later, when the time is right. And the '89 will give you 95% of what the '76 has, and it will probably be better all-around.

I'd shy away from any option where you borrow money to acquire a 30 year old car.
Some folks think that the early turbos are poised to be the next big thing...if you believe that then your resto, whether garage queen or driver quality would need to be "correct" and original in order to preserve value. Maintaining originality may not give you the most fun 930 driver. As Rocket mentions, its a good time to buy. Lots of nice cars for sale at relatively low prices...like this one:1987 Porsche 930 FS Looks like you are set up for a good time no matter what you decide. Good luck.

Do you want to DRIVE, or do you want a beautiful car to look at?
If you want to DRIVE, buy another one and work on the resto car slowly. If you want the beautiful 100/100 car go ahead and go for it! That's cool too. If you want the 100/100 car and the driver car you need to start hammering the overtime or sell something. Regardless, if you're not happy with your current car, make it go away!!

Buy a 3.3 930 and sell the rest. Enjoy the car, instead of wrenching on one for years. $20k isn't near enough money to do the restoration on the '76, if you want a 100 point car. You can piss away that much money on one that runs and drives and doesn't need a full rebuild.
Been there and done that... JR |

Option 4.1: Sell 944, get the 930 running on the cheap. Drive it and love it as you slowly improve it. It satisfies almost all of your needs. Not sure if your partner would keep equity while you enjoyed it or would have to be bought out first.
Great choices! Larry |

Turbos don't do that well in thin air. Philly isn't that hot, even in the summer. About that 951S - as RNajarian asked -- how much, what condition, and what mods have you done to it?!? -Z

As long as you have taken care ofd other business like good retirement plan, managable mortgage, etc...life's short and you need a toy.
I wouldn't choose a 930 as a toy, but I'm not you...
