Mother of all sinkholes

Flooding opens up sinkholes in Guatemala City - Yahoo! News Photos

Easy to lose something in that.

OTOH dont have to get out on the roof of a building illegally to base jump or practice rappelling (sp).

Can you imagine if something like that happened in the U.S.....like in Washington D.C........and all of the problems it would solve?

This isn't the first time this has happened. Here's one from 2007 in Guatamala

Guatemala City Sinkhole

If you guys have ever been to the Yucatan...the area is littered with underground rivers. There are sink holes in the area that the Olmec and Maya used as ceremonial sights. It's no surprise that more open up, just people have chosen to build over some of the underground rivers...

I bet somebody with one of those ground radar units could make a killing there now. Everyone would probably want to know if they're over a potential sink hole. I know I would.

I was gonna post this earlier.

That hole is SO perfectly cylindrical, it looks like a photoshop. Regardless, that is seriously freaky.

Guatemala City Sinkhole

"A 330-foot-deep sinkhole opened up before dawn, killing two teenage siblings, Irma and David Soyos, and their father Domingo Soyos, 53, when it swallowed about a dozen homes and forced the evacuation of nearly 1,000 people in a crowded Guatemala City neighbourhood. Officials blamed recent rains and an underground sewage flow from a ruptured main for the tragedy. The pit stank, growled and shook the surrounding ground. Water could be heard in the depths. Authorities fear it could widen or other sinkholes open up.

Residents had heard noises and felt vibrations for weeks."

Santa Maria....imagine losing your whole family like that, then trying to find a meaning to the rest of your life. Talk about UTTERLY RANDOM and a completely and totally beyond senseless event.

Two different sinkholes, two different events.

Over one half of the US is on rock formations susceptible to this sort of thing, apparently....

Saw a sinkhole in San Francisco, water pipe broke in earthquake, street washed out later. Up the hill toward Pacific Heights from the Marina. Was going down on the mountain bike, almost went in it. Had a few people think I was some crazy guy blocking the street, but they thanked me after they checked out the hole.
