College Softball Worlds Serise

Somehow I got pneumonia and have been off work all week. I'm a sports fan and have been watching allot of softball. It's an exciting sport to watch and I've become a fan. It started when Hawaii upset Alabama, now Tenn. is up 2-0 over GA. The Tenn picture is throwing some heat.

When I was younger I played some mens fast pitch and the softball is much more challenging to hit than a baseball. It's exciting, fast, and no long TV time-outs like football.

So, I'm for Tenn in the series. Anyone else watching?

BTW, I was so sick for a couple days that I was finally able to quit chewing snuff.
Feel great now.

I grew up on a softball field. My dad pitched fastpitch from the late 40's until about 1975. In his heyday he pitched AAA and semi-pro in San Diego. Back then they would get thousands of spectators at games as that was long before MLB was in San Diego. All of the large contractor firms (General Dynamics, Solar, etc) had semi-pro teams and it was a big deal. I was basically born on the field and always preferred softball to baseball. Played competitive softball, mostly as shortstop or pitcher (some fastpitch but mostly 12' and unlimited arc) up until about 1.5 years ago when my body finally couldn't take it any more.

You may be a lesbian...

glbtq >> arts >> Sports: Lesbian

Quote:
The connection between lesbianism and athletic achievement is complex and many-faceted. It may be that young lesbians are drawn to athletics because they are attracted to women-only environments or because sports give young women an opportunity to take themselves seriously and to push their physical limits and develop their skills in ways that more traditionally "feminine" activities do not.

Whatever the reason, sports are undeniably a central part of lesbian culture.

A telling example of the importance of sports to lesbian culture is the fact that softball teams are cherished institutions in many lesbian communities. Indeed, joining a lesbian softball team is often the first move a new lesbian in town makes to meet other like-minded women.

Almost every major city has its own softball league (often with unmistakable marks of lesbian "processing," such as allowing team members to take turns coaching or softening rules according to players' individual strengths and weaknesses and needs).

More generally, whether it is participating in a community softball team, cheering on the local university women's basketball team, or watching Martina Navratilova smash a serve over the net on television, many lesbians love identifying with "jocks."

Hey Nostatic, it was big time years ago where I came from too. Some of the players played until their mid 50's. Everyone would bring coolers with beer and sanwhiches and we'd sit in the duggout and drink beer when our team was at bat.

Must still be big in Cal. for the women, most of the teams playing in the tournoment have several Californians playing for them.

Tenn. hit a grand slam earlier in the game and leads 7-1.

Seriously, I caught a bit on a TV at the gym.

I saw some girl pitching underhand and right-handed. Nothing unusual there. What I had never seen before was she was flicking her wrist so that the ball was leaving her hand on the right side of her wrist. It looked possibly painful and definitely awkward, but it put such a weird spin on the ball that I doubt most MLB players could hit it.

My dad used to be able to make the ball break any of 4 directions - curve, screwball, drop, riser. The mound is 40' or so away from the plate so with a good pitcher the ball is on you incredibly fast. One of my little league coaches pitched with my dad and would sometimes throw batting practice to us underhand with a baseball. Would freak you out - almost impossible to pick up the ball coming out of his hip.
