Question for the computor guys

At work we have Satilite internet that is wireless around the main camp but the signal will not reach where me and my crew are set up, we have to walk up to the main camp for a signal. we were going to get a couple of repeater antenna's to get the signal from the dish to us at about 1000 feet away. how many of these repeater antenna's would we need?
Is the Cat 5 cable an option or is the 11-1200 that it would take for the cable just too far?

Too long for Cat5.

Are you geographically downhill from base camp?

Cat 5 is good for about 300 feet at full speed. The speed is supposed to degredate after that. If you were to use a simple wifi router with a high gain antenna, you would likely get your 1000 feet. An example, a wifi router that puts out 100mW of power, through an 11 dBi gain antenna will likely allow you to send and receive with a laptop with 100mW and 2dBi gain antenna about 1/4 mile, or 1200 feet +/-.

Oh, if you are using 2.4GHz or higher (wifi b, g, parts of n) trees will greatly attinuate the signal and decrease the distance achieved if you try to blast through them. If you can get above the trees you will have more luck getting your signal out.

As stated, cat5 is not even remotely in spec at that distance. Best bet would be another wap at the remote camp and a good directional antenna or two.

I'm not recommending this, but just as a proof of concept, WokFi or Woktennas can provide anywhere from 3-10km of service with 2 matched antennas.
