Lower back Pain

Anybody ever have a lower back pain to the point where it sends pain down your butt cheeks and through your hamstrings. Think its a thrown disc? Strained muscles?

Me and lower back pain go waaay back.

All cures and non-surgical remedies to date have been temporary at best.

In the lower spine? Or starting where the hip bone joins the socket?

Yep.
Had a laminectomy in 1985.

Surgery should be your last resort IMO, taking a real good look at your sleep posture and correcting it may help more than anything else you can do.

If you can build the supporting musculature, that it the paraspinals, and surrounding upper legs and lower abdominal muscle groups. You can sustain a lot of hard tissue damage and degeneration over a long period of time.

Stretching.
Most by the time we are 30 have lost so much flexibility, it's ridiculous.
If your legs, butt, hips and back are all very tight....your lower back has no chance.
Stretching has cured most of my lower back issues.
Never too late to get in the program.
I'm 55, and my golf game thanks me.

+1 on the strenthening as well.
It's so easy to strain lower back muscles with just regular day-to-day activities.

oh lets see...

herniated disc L4 L5 S1 (low back)

diagnosed with degenerative disc disease, annular tears in tissue surrounding my spinal cord, had surgery in 2002 (discotomy) which ultimately helped turn the lights back on to feeling in my extremities but failed to prevent further degradation of the discs, pain etc. which I live with today. Hey at least my neck is healthy! (wrong! car crash in March tweaked that too) *see the I need a attorney thread later today

I should have had the discs-fused together and been done with it, but was talked out of it by my surgeon b/c I was young and would bounce back.. it's not the years doc it's the miles!

Bets thing I did was get in shape! Exercise was the most effective way of alleviating the pressure, pain and stiffness

Moral to my story: don't ignore your body!
If it's Sciatica get checked out for herniated disc etc, then get a good stretching routine established.

Don't sit for more then 2hrs at a time without getting up and walking around and stretching. The quads and hamstrings can pull your hips and low back out of alignment if their tight and/or have had inadequate blood flow (from sitting for 2+ hrs for example)

Take deep breaths and get good oxygenated blood pumping to those areas!

Stay hydrated!

I found a lot of these symptoms can be compounded by dehydration and not enough exercise and stretching!

I also bought a tenz unit, basically an electrical-stimulation device that uses electric pulses in varying patterns to interrupt the pain signals from my nerves to the brain, it also breaks up muscle knots and settles spasms. cost was <100 incl multiple stim pads

I ignored the symptoms your having for years and really screwed myself. If I'd paid attention to my body I could have possibly avoided the level of damage I live with today..

If you need a good stretching routine PM me I've got a bunch of good stuff!

Be good to your body & back, it's the only one you'll have

Just my .02

I screwed my back and neck up when I hit a dinky little tree with my dirt back going full tilt. Thought I broke my neck it hurt so bad. Seven years later, the neck is better, but stiff. The back is better, but gets painful every so often.

The offending tree and my son showing how I hit it:

I occassionally get upper and lower back pain?

The cure? Working out my back in the area that hurts. For me, it tends to be caused by my chest or my abs getting stronger than my upper or lower back, and then pulling on the weaker muscle constantly, causing pain.

The first time this happened, I went to the doctor, and this was his recomendation.

Had that a while back and it was miserable. Pain sitting down and nearly unbearable pain laying down in any position. It felt best when I was standing but when I walked I had limited control of the right foot. I lost a ton of sleep over next couple months. Vicoden and soma didn't really help unless I combined with vodka, hot bath, and adult supervision. It slowly went away on it's own and now I'm pretty active in stretching and building core strength.

I have been fighting a sprained disk on and off since about 1998. Recently I have felt better than ever after a starting new weight routine including deadlifts of all things.

Both sides - O don't carry a wallet - starts right above my butt cheeks and proceeds to my hamstrings to the back of my knees. Ice and or heat has no effect, either do OTC pain killers. Tired stretching - no help either.

I'm gonna see a chiropractor tomorrow.
