What is Your Favorite Dimensionless Group? (POLL)

Vote for Your Favorite Dimensionless Group!

I'm fond of the solar system.

RWebb 05-24-2010 07:50 PM

thing cut off my title - there can only be ONE WINNER!

Schumi 05-24-2010 08:27 PM

%#*&$#! I chose reynolds (because I worked as an aerodynamicist for an open wheel formula racing team for quite some time...)

but then I saw nusselt number.... I love me some heat transfer!

Schumi 05-24-2010 08:28 PM

And you forgot Eckert Number... named after a relative of mine.

Pazuzu 05-24-2010 08:32 PM

Sorry, but your favorites SUCK.

Fine Structure Constant. Not only dimensionless, but the integral link between all of the physical constants of the local Universe.

RWebb 05-24-2010 08:59 PM

yeh Mike - mine tend to be clustered around heat transfer and fluid flow

sorry 'bout yer unerverse, bud

Jim Richards 05-25-2010 02:06 AM

The local universe is so limited, Mike. Think big, man!

Porsche-O-Phile 05-25-2010 02:27 AM

I don't see R value or U value listed...

red-beard 05-25-2010 03:42 AM

Yep, I was an Aero...And I do more with gas flows than anything else, these days.

Lay off the enchiladas for a while...

Fajitas and local micro-brewed beer!

"local universe" was a safety measure, since Sniper would come in and claim I was saying stuff that wasn't 100% fully completely absolutely proven everywhere for all time.

It seems that thermo has too many simple equations if they have that many dimensionless numbers flopping around... :p

arcsine 05-25-2010 08:40 AM

I'm partial to Reynolds, and Pi gets a lot of press but I'm going off the chart and saying the Poisson ratio or perhaps Drag coefficient.

Like the Biot number...well, techincally its heat transfer

BlueSkyJaunte 05-25-2010 09:10 AM

Overheard in the MechE lab:

Cute Co-ed #1: Hey, how's the homework going?
Cute Co-ed #2: It sucks! I'm up to my butt in Fluids.

skinnerd 05-25-2010 10:55 AM

Crap....I used to be an engineer (or so I thought), and I haven't even "heard" of most of these, let alone, know what they are?

Great fodder for a quiz night somewhere....

I'll stick with Pi.....something I can wrap my arms around.....arrrr, arrrr.

Por_sha911 05-25-2010 11:20 AM

PPOT and PARF. Both include folks that defy logic and know no bounds for stupidity.

I eliminated the really common ones - almost dropped off Re for that reason also, but I like it tooooo much
