iPad video conversions
 

Been converting videos for use on the iPad.

I rip using DVDFab and save the Main movie without compression.
I use the DVD9 setting so the file size is not reduced.

Then on to Handbrake to convert the file for iPad compatibility.

I can achive beautiful video quality while compressing down to .mp4 but usually have low audio issues.

I have tested my conversion settings within Handbrake by converting to .mkv files instead of .mp4 and the audio is fine. The .mp4 conversion seems to lower audio levels. I have tried other conversion software with similar results. Google searches result in many having same issues with most software.

I have tried other software which contain audio boosters but can't get a good combo of video and audio.

Sometimes I can use itunes to pump up the volume (using the volume booster in 'info' settings) but other times it makes very little improvement.

Anyone master DVD to iPad video yet?

Have you tried Videora? This worked fine for my iPod and iPhone, not tired it yet for iPad, they do have an iPad version.

Pretty much all of those utilities are front end gui's for the underlying libraries/codecs that either come with or are added to the system.

How well they work depends on how well they hook in.

DVD's are already compressed and there are multiple options for the audio codec which can create issues when you come back the other way.

I am a fan of a utility called Mpeg Streamclip from squared 5. Freeware, works really well.

I would recommend experimenting with different audio codecs until you are happy. May want to consider H264 which is a subset of MPEG 4 but allows lower bit rates for video while maintaining quality. May give you the headroom to bring the audio bit rate up.

I have used Videora for my iPhone with great results.

I converted my first few videos for the pad with Videora and the pic quality was not good enough so I moved on to Handbrake. Now that I have a good grasp on the settings the pad likes, I will try Videora again. The standard setting for iPad with Videora was not the best pic quality - slightly grainy.

Will try again tonight with Vidora and Mpeg Streamclip.

Do you use a Mac? I use handbrake to do rip the DVD and then use MetaX to put on the DVD art work and chapter info. Then its a drag and drop into iTunes. I stream or sync to my Apple TV and iPad with no issues.

PQDVD is a one step solution. On my PC, the process takes about 1/3rd of the DVD length. (150 minute DVD = 50 minute conversion).

They have specific converters for the iPad/Pod/Phone, Windows Mobile and Palm, etc.

PC - no Mac yet, but with all my Apple toys, a Mac looks to be in the near future.
