I can't wait for the thread, "Some *#$& Biker Cussed Me Out Today!"

One day it's gonna happen. Two Pelicans are going to throw down without realizing it and we'll have ten threads discussing which shooting was justified.

sounds nearly exactly like a conversation i had with a guy last summer. all the while, his down's syndrome son (really, i am not being mean) was aghast in the passenger seat.

It was only my cat-like reflexes that saved me from certain doom. I laid on the horn just to let him know I was right outside his door. Literally.

We got to one of two light controled intersections on the whole road about half a mile later. I pulled up next to his door and told him he damn near hit me. I was actually even polite about it. His response? "Fark you. I couldn't see you."

"I was watching; you never even looked."

"Kiss my ass, you were in the dark shadows."

(Now I'm starting to spool up) "My headlight is on, ass hole."

"Well, muthafarker, maybe if you weren't going so flippin' fast."

"You just said you couldn't see me, dipshyte."

"Fark you."

"Ya wanna pull over and say that again, or should I just drag you out the god damn window and pound you like a farkin' tent stake right here in the middle of the road?"

"Fark you, I'll kick yer ass."

"Bring it..."

And Mr. Tough guy leaves when the light turns green. He wouldn't even look at me anymore. I guess I'm glad he kept going; I'm getting too old for this crap.

Be careful, they're out there. And they will blame you...

I pretty much stopped using my motorcycle to commute to work. It's just not worth the risk. The morning and afternoon commute, everyone is on autopilot and in a freakin daze. Not paying attention to whats going on around them. I've had way to many close calls. Especially in the morning.

Rick Lee 05-26-2010 08:41 AM

Ironically, I always found commuting to be no problem on a bike, from a safety standpoint. This goes double for areas with carpool lanes, since bikes can take those. Murphy and the Grim Reaper tend to go along for the ride when you're on a non-essential trip, one that could easily be put off or done by foot or car, but you decided to take the bike for no good reason. Everytime I've trashed a car or dropped my bike, it was doing something I didn't have to do at all, running out for a pizza in the rain in my BMW 2002, offroading on my GS, etc.

I commute about 8 months out of the year and I average at least one incident per month in which I may lose big time if I do not see it coming. Accept that you may likely die because of some ones inattentiveness and ride on or quit. No point in being angry, it is what it is.

LeeH 05-26-2010 10:40 AM

We had a dump truck take out a pack of motorcycles here in Phoenix several weeks ago. I don't care what you do, it's hard to compete against a dump truck whose driver is on meth.

That dumpstruck hit was right in front of my gym and 1 mile from my house. I ride through that intersection just about every day. The memorial on the side of the road is huge and a stark reminder. I really keep an eye on my mirrors now when at intersections. Helmets meant nothing in this accident. Those bikers' numbers were up.

dlockhart 05-26-2010 11:23 AM

It seems getting A$$ packed at a intersection is not far behind drivers turning left in front of a bike as a common way to be killed by stupid.
I line up to the very edge of the my lane so there is space for a moron to blow past and I keep the bike in gear and my eyes in the mirror until I have vehicles stopped behind me to act as a crash barrier.

Great advice - Get used to it and get over it.....Happens all the time....If you and the driver are both at a dead stop, you pass on the right and he turns right, you DID NOT ALMOST DIE.....You dealt with the the reality of riding a motorcycle........Long term, you live longer by not getting upset...

Sorry, but I have over 1/2 million miles on m/c's and rode one for a living for over 10 years.......

widebody911 05-26-2010 02:01 PM

I had a similar incident a few years ago with a dumbass on a motorcycle. I was in my 911, waiting to turn right in one of those mini-lanes specifically for right turns. There was a lot of traffic, so it was going to be a while. Some dipschidt on a bike rolled up in my blind spot on the right, saw there wasn't an opening, and put his feet down. When an a spot opened up, I took off - and heard a scream: I had run over his foot with my right rear tire. It was 150% his fault; a) he tried to "pass" me on the right, and b) didn't watch where he put his feet. He's lucky I took off slowly, or I would have ripped his foot off, and with the B&B exhaust, I wouldn't have heard him scream like a little girl.

Percentage-wise, I see way more stupid/inconsiderate moves on the part of motorcyclists that I do cars, and bikers are second only to gays in their attitudes of entitlement and victimhood. As the OP clearly demonstrated in this thead, to the biker, the 'cager' (you even have a cute nickname for us!) is always wrong, irrespective of the facts.

BGCarrera32 05-26-2010 02:13 PM

In the 911 last summer sitting in the left lane of a 4 lane highway at a red light, I was the first car in my lane at the intersection. A guy on a brand new Suzuki Boulevard cruiser pulls up right on my bumper- likely less than 2 feet away. No helmet, no gloves, t-shirt, shorts, and a backpack.

Light turns green and I take off not slow, but not fast either. He was gonna show me who was boss- while I'm getting this "this ain't gonna be good feeling" because he is so close to the back of my car. Glancing at him in my rear view mirror, he looks over into the right lane, looking for an opening so he can get on the throttle, and blow by. Only problem is, there is no opening and when he looks back into our lane, he's 1 foot off my bumper, just as I dipped in the clutch to grab second. He panics and locks his front brake, taking him right to the pavement on his bare skin and ruins the whole side of his bike. I never touched my brakes before he crashed and he never hit me, took himself totally out on his own.

Good thing we have those "Start seeing Motorcycles" bumper stickers everywhere.

Rest assured, I am equally outraged by inattentive drivers while in my cage as on the bike.

I heard that once too, so I moved.

Glad to hear you're okay. People need to be more aware of bikes. We had an asswipe here doing her nails behind the wheel. She killed a woman on a motorcycle.

Driver Crashes While Shaving Genitals

I am so not clicking on that link.

Once, when waiting in the interminable traffic jam to get on the Bay Bridge onramp, I apparently stopped where I didn't leave enough room on either side of the 911 to let a motorcyclist thread through. He started swearing and thumping my rear bumper with his front wheel. Wow, I thought, how do you know whether I have any impulse control? That was about 5-7 years ago. I figure he's dead by now.

If you're on a two-wheeler, s/he can look right at you and no see you, because s/he is only "looking" for a car. If you're on a two-wheeler doing something that a car can't do or typically wouldn't do, s/he will not expect you to be there, because, again, you're not a car so you don't exist.

A two-wheeler splitting lanes, sharing the lane, passing in the lane, hiding in a small blind spot - that was you - or even a two-wheeler riding in the middle of an empty road without a car nearby - that was Jeff Higgins - does not exist for Mr/Mrs average car driver.

Sounds terrible, but the driver I'm describing is not even a "really bad" driver. For a really bad driver, even other cars sometimes don't exist.

I'm not a super experienced rider - all I do is buzz around town on my Vespa - but I intend to survive anyway, which is why I assume invisibility. Same on my bicycle.

My biggest fear is someone turning left in front of me. OP would have gotten hit at 5 mph and very likely survived. Someone turns left in front of you, that's a 30-45mph hit and much less survivable.

Be sure to steer clear of the mass transit busses up there, John...

ive riden bikes for years and am highly aware of when they are around. Make room if i see someone splitting lanes ect.

I now have a suzuki drz ( dual sport ). The only road riding I do now is on the way to the dirt.

I recently purchased an chevy express cargo van.

It has flat out the worst blind spots of any vehicle I have ever driven.

If you are riding and near a cargo van be aware that he cant see squat.

ride safe guys

JCF 05-27-2010 05:37 AM

I assume every car/van/truck can't see me or is out to actually hit me.
That there will be a cars coming out of every side road and intersection (or from behind).
That animals will actually run at me - had a squirrel do that this am, just missed my back wheel.
I only ride in the early am or at other quiet times when there are fewer cars on the road.
I don't ride on Interstates.
I am always looking out for the unexpected - like a trailered telephone pole sticking across the traffic lane like the one which killed a motorcyclist a half mile from my house.
I do all this in my car as well.
I still realize that none of this makes me completely safe.
No healthy person expects to die when they wake up in the am, but many do.
But you need to live your life.

That's life.

David 05-27-2010 07:32 AM

With more riders on the road, I do see more stupid motorcyclists than ever before. The one's that really get me are the slow guys in the left lane. I do my best to give extra room to motorcyclists but if you're tying up traffic by going slow in the left lane, I don't consider you a motorcyclist so I don't give the same respect.
