2011 Mercedes-Benz S350 4MATIC BlueTec Diesel - Car News - Auto Reviews - Car and Driver

Mercedes is bringing their flagship diesel, the s350 bluetec with 4matic, to North America in 2011. WHat an outstanding car, I can't wait to find a slightly ratty 4 year old one, and clog it up with vegetable oil. HOOBOY

I wouldn't mind one of those myself.

my guess is they will hold value longer than the typical S-class. In large part due to not too many being bought here. I mean, you have to consider the first-purchase person. ...not looking for an econo-box feature. However, a car with a crazy long range has appeal to that type of buyer. The hassle of filling a V12 S-class has GOT to get old fast.

Or filling an S63. Or even an S550 is a thirsty beast. I saw a new S400 hybrid on the road the other day, first one I've seen. I'm imagining that it's a good hybrid, can't see MB doing that half-assed. The really great cars would be diesel/electric hybrids.

I thought that the new diesels with their sophisticated engine-management systems would be a lot more fuel-sensitive and not burn any grease(?)

good point Denis. They might burn it, but at what cost?

Jake,

You know you just might be able to find the drivetrain from one of those things for the 4runner pickup.

I wouldn't mind having that 3 liter diesel in an F-150. Nice torque.

Keep smiling!
Les

I've got a bleumotion diesel and absolutely no veggie oil allowed . Will ruin the system.

You could piss in the fuel tank of one of these after a night of drinking and it wouldn't even stutter.

I would love to see them bring in the S450 diesel V8.

That's what they say, but they also said that about VW TDi's, the mb om606 (like mine), the newer mercedes 320CDi, all of which have been converted to run well and run reliably. The more complex the car is, the more complex the conversion. My e300d took a month and a half to tweak *just so* until I could switch over without triggering codes and the CEL. It works flawlessly, and I put 55k kms on it last year, spending only $1182 on diesel. I know people with the newer ones and they say they were easier to convert, and run just as well. You just can't do a Home Depot hose clamp and copper tube conversion, like you can on the old MBs and VWs.

It'll be a l o n g time before I get a 2011 s350 in my sights, but the 2006ish R350 bluetec is starting to come within reach. That's a heck of a car, if a bit ugly.

Hey Les, my 4runner has a stout but underpowered 2.4l diesel, non turbo. It runs like a champ, but couldn't pull a sick w#ore off a pee pot!
