Son's Been Bug'n Me To Get Him This, Finally Broke Down...

Our Son has been bug'n the crap out of me to buy him a new mower - we been limping through each year with an old Craftsman. Fianlly it went the way of all flesh last year - cord return broke, transmission failed, wheel broke and would start. He has been looking at various fliers, reading consumer reports, checking out the Home Depot and Lowes as well as Walmart and Target. It came down to a Troybuilt or a John Deere. He made the observation that the JD was $150 more than the Troybuilt and both had B&S engines - just didn't seem like the green paint was worth it. He them found a Troybuilt with a Honda engine and that sealed the deal!

Well, he's a good kid and he will be earning money cutting folks lawns again this year so I bought it. Maybe this year I won't charge him for gas when he cuts other people lawns...

here he is working - $10 a lawn, no trimming, trimming is an extra $5! He has the Mexicans beat!!!

Had that exact same mower. Just make sure he doesn't drop it down into a bunch of tall wet grass, like my wife did. Did I mention we now have the non-self propelled version of that mower?

$10 a lawn??

I charged $25 a lawn and I still had the pros around here beat.

10bucks a lawn?? I charged that much when I was a kid, 40 years ago. I guess inflation skipped the lawn care industry

I just bought a JD.
You made the right choice.

Get him some ear plugs too!

pwd72s 05-27-2010 03:57 PM

$10? Hell, send him by! I'd even be generous and pay him $5 extra for bagging the clippings..:D

That's WAYYY to cheap for yard work. I earned 2 /12 times that much, way back in 1973... and I didn't supply the equipment, or the gas, and a free lunch was included.

Bought a JD last summer. What a POS. The left front wheel fell off from a bad weld, the air filter constantly fills up with dirt from the closed shoot, the self propel on the handle bar is difficult to use, blah, blah, blah...

The Troybilt was a good choice.

The Honda engine will be MUCH nicer than the B&S.

pwd72s 05-27-2010 05:44 PM

Yep...A snapper commercial grade mower with a honda engine here...much better than my old snapper with a Briggs...

Earplugs would be good but that mower is damn quite! I normally make him wear his workboots and jeans - the pic is a maidan voyage.

$10 is a great price, most of the Mexicans here charge $20 to $25 and they include trimming and edging. Keep in mind the lawns are pretty small as well. He is just looking to undercut them and build clients. Tough to compete with the Mexicans around here - they work very well, they are fast and they don't take breaks.

A great name for his business 'Max's Undercut Lawn Service"!

$10?

He needs to make an east coast swing!

Great job, mowing lawns is a good thing for a kid. Get him some boots though.

I see a turf war coming.

kanadary 05-28-2010 05:45 AM

at $10 a yard he must have a full client list. mine charges $35 and we don't even have a very big yard.

Tom '74 911 05-28-2010 08:31 AM

My dad paid my brother and I $50 to cut our lawn. It was BIG. If we tag-teamed it, we could be done in 3 days - just enough time to take a few days off and start all over again!

mistertate 05-28-2010 02:45 PM

All I ever begged for was the mower would break down and we'd move to a condo.

G50 05-28-2010 03:14 PM

Tell him to watch out for this kid, he takes no prisoners!

Once he has a full client list, he should raise his rates.
