Jeep worth question?

Anyone know what a 50s to early 60s 4 cylinder Jeep is worth? I rank it at 6-7 out of 10. I think it may or may not be a CJ5. I know its the same size. My neighbor might be selling and I am thinking about it. He doesn't drive it much and it is under cover most of the time.

Don't mean to be a smart-ass, but it's worth what-ever you're willing to pay for it. Limited audience for such a rig. Google might be your friend. Do a search for comparables on Hemmings.com, etc. Lot's of price guides on the web. Might be a fun toy.

I have no idea, but my uncle has an old 50's jeep sitting on the family farm in East Texas. He said he has quite a few folks stop and try to buy it. He tells them his nephew is in Iraq and it's his jeep, which is a bit of a white lie, but it keeps them from pushing any farther.

I had a '62 CJ-5.

Interesting to drive, you're sitting a couple inches from the Rear wheel.

Wheelbase about like an old Beetle, but much taller.

I could (and did) drive it for weeks without using the clutch pedal.

I put overdrive and a Chevy V8 in it. Didn't need a heater with the mufflers right under the seats.

Yes, very short wheelbase. I had a Wrangler, it was fun to drive, but this thing is like driving a uni-cycle. I think?

Why did you put a V8 in it? Was it under power that much and how did the tranny like the additional tq?

I miss mine. If it is from the 50's or back it isn't a CJ, it's an MB.

I knew little about Jeeps when I bought it. A PO had pulled the 4 and put in a Willys straight 6 (direct bolt-in). The engine went South, couldn't find parts, and a friend had a rebuilt 283 sitting in his garage.

Very, very easy to do, several companies make (made?) conversion kits to attach the chevy bellhousing to the Jeep tranny.

Never had a bit of trouble with the tranny (3 speed). The OD made it a 6 speed, sort of. In fact, with the
V-8, I just left it in high range all the time except when 4-wheeling.

Didn't really feel underpowered with the I-6 (never had the 'Hurricane 4' when I had it. It was geared low and it was about revved out at 60 on the highway. Often drove it down to Taos.

Any Jeep catalog has kits to mount a bunch of different engines, trannys and transfer cases into just about any era of Jeep.

Buying a Jeep is just the "Starter kit". No vehicle is customized/modified/butchered as much as Jeeps.
