Last lap crash at Indy 500, how bad?

I slow motioned the crash and it sure looked like Mike Conway's entire engine and trans penetrated the fence just below the first row seats over in T4. I know I saw a rear tire ass'y pin balling off the grandstand supports below the seats, so it was definitely thru the fence.

The car was shown spinning and flipping with only the yellow bulkhead behind the driver. Nothing attached behind that. I think the wholl ass'y is under the stands.

So, anyone know if there were spectator injuries? This was a very scary crash. Conway walked away!!

Embraer 05-30-2010 02:55 PM

no spectator injuries. i was right there.

 'bra... glad you're okay.

It was full moon fever today, that's for sure... anytime you have the Penske and Ganassi teams making massive screwups during pits, something is way outta whack.

Conway didn't exactly walk away... he hobbled... his left leg is broken.

My 2 sons and I were at that IRL race in Charlotte in May '99 when that tire and a lot of crash debris went over the fence and killed 3 spectators and injured 8. Scary stuff... we were down near the start/finish line, so were nowhere near it. :(

Thanks for the update. the TV coverage ended before any details were announced.

He's lucky that's all that happened to him. So I guess Hunter Reay was a bit lucky as well.

Jalopnik has the ESPN video - the in-camera shot is amazing:

I sure get tired of that stupid statement. Why don't you email that to Mike Conway.

I may be wrong about the engine ass'y as the video Plumley posted shows something with a wheel attached on the track surface. I saw that errant wheel under the stands in that video.

Yeah, "That'll buff right out" and "My dad has an awesome set of tools..."

Let's just drop those, okay?

I'm amazed that the force of the impact opened his helmet visor - lucky nothing got in.

Cant believe he is, for the most part, ok. When the tv was showing that ditz running down the pit lane the only thing I was thinking was, is he dead? Amazing what just the lat ten years of safety has brought. Remember watching Gille qualify....

Heel n Toe 05-30-2010 10:35 PM

In the third pic Don posted where you're looking at the bottom of Conway's car... look just above the right rear tire at the cutiepie in the yellow shirt... and the dude in the red bandana next to her... and next to him, "Mama" in the black tanktop going, "DAYYYUUUUMMMMM!" ...and next to her, cousin Jethro with the telephoto lens gettin' a VERY blurry photo of the action to show the folks back home... in Indiana. :D

Yeah, buddy... and some of you guys talk about the South being full of inbred rednecks. L O L !

Yikes... it even looks like "Mama" is pregnant... or is that a beer gut?

Embraer 05-31-2010 06:06 AM

I was about 200 feet west (left) of the car when it hit the fence. really, the only people who knew the wreck happened were RIGHT by it.....everybody was focused on watching franchitti role through the front stretch under caution.

For anyone who ever doubted the use of wood for the undertray, there it is.

peppy 05-31-2010 08:08 AM

When I saw them pull his helmet off, I thought he was dead.

Damn that is a dangerous sport.

URY914 05-31-2010 10:00 AM

There is talk now that Conway may have come up on a car (Hunter-Rey possibly) that had run out off fuel.

Fine, Brazilian hardwood... handrubbed to perfection.

Yep, looked like Mahogany to me...
