The migraine from hell this weekend

I woke up yesterday with a slight headache. By mid afternoon it has grown into a full blown migraine. The worst one I've had in a long time. OTC meds weren't doing anything other than make me sick to my stomach so I broke out the prescription stuff and went to bed early. I woke this morning, no change. I spent the day hiding from the light and practicing non traditional pain management techniques (meditation/ hypnosis). No relief. Tonight I'm hoping to die quietly in my sleep.
A perfect weekend wasted.

My sympathies. The only thing that gets me through it is Zomig, but that stuff turns me into a complete zombie.

Hope you feel better soon. I wouldn't wish migraines on anybody.

Kevin,

Hope you're doing better.

My wife takes a form of topamax (sp?) to try to head off her migranes. When one gets her it usually means a trip to the health center, which involves vomiting as soon as the car moves out of the driveway and "the protocol": an iv drip and warm blankets for a few hours.

You have my deepest sympathies.

Les

Not Snake Oil...

Kevin

Read this in our paper and saw it on TV. An Ottawa doctor develop an Iphone Migraine Application. Some thing to do with "balancing and inner ear". Looked really weird but the patient that was using it said it really help.

iManage Migraine iPhone application - AppStoreHQ

Maybe worth to take a look especially if you got the phone.

Cheers

J.J.

Damn....couldn't even die in my sleep.
Thanks all. This isn't going to be a good week here. I've got a call in to the Doc, we'll see what she says.

Luckily my migranes come few and far between and they only last 3 hours max... My last one was just two weeks ago. I tried to combat it with lots of alcohol, but that didn't help either...

In college I used to get them at least once a month and I tried various forms of medicine. Nothing worked for me, including giving myself a shot of some sort.

In the end I just walk around for about an hour in the dark. Get sick and then try to fall asleep as fast as possible. I really can't imagine that amount of pain more than a few hours...

My friend gets regular accupuncture appointments to help prevent the migranes. I guess it has worked so far. You also might want to get your back/spine looked at by a good chiropractor. I guess pinched nerves can also trigger really bad headaches.

Suffer from migraine? You are not alone. Approximately 28 million people in the United States suffer from migraine attacks.

Migraine attacks can last hours or days and are commonly accompanied by throbbing headache pain, nausea, sensitivity to light and sound, and other symptoms.

Each person’s experience with migraine may be different — but understanding your personal experience with it (including potential triggers and symptoms) — may help you to better manage it.

iManage Migraine provides a comprehensive suite of educational tools, real-time tracking, and analytic capabilities to enable you to better understand and manage your personal migraine experience.

My wife suffers form these...

I wish the medical community could come up with a more proactive solution than drugging into a comatose state.

She has drugs but won't take them because like others have posted she doesn't like the zombie effect.

Yeah but I guess if you are suffering from it, it could be worth.

The clip I saw on the news look really weird.

Knock on wood...

Agree. My wife gets them about once a month right in line with her cycle. They have tried everything even Beta Blockers, she uses Relpax now with mixed results.
Nobody really knows what cause them or what to do. Anyone tried acupunture?

The zombie effect is weird. Last time I was 100% convinced my arms had fallen off...even though I was waving my hands around as I explained this to my wife.

I'm getting better. I'll take one more VicodinES before stopping for the evening. I'm sure I'll be hung over tomorrow but the painful part is over.
Thanks for asking.

I know of a consistently effective treatment that does not involve narcotics at all. Occipital nerve block. This has worked 100% of the time, though I have only used it on a few people, and maybe a dozen times total. Lidocaine squirted up the nose works, but not as well or consistently.

My wife gets migraines occasionally

On the back of your head, near where it is attached to your neck, there are two bony protruberances(occipital protruberance) If about 0.5 cc of lidocaine(local anesthetic) is injected here, it is very effective in relieving migraine pain. My wife learned this when working as a nurse for a DO, has worked every time so far.On the back of your head, near where it is attached to your neck, there are two bony protruberances(occipital protruberance) If about 0.5 cc of lidocaine(local anesthetic) is injected here, it is very effective in relieving migraine pain. Is lidocaine not a narcotic? Something about getting a needle in the back of my neck sends shivers down my spine.

No, local anesthetic, still controlled substance. If you are really having a migraine, taking a .38 to the dome seems reasonable. Injection is painful(per the wife) but brief and provides profound relief.

Back of the melon, not the neck

There fixed it for you. A .380 would have been a reasonable solution Sunday night.
