Bezerkeley Rogue Attacks Cyclists - captured

S.F. police report arrest in hit-run attacks

mowed down 4 bikers in a 5 minute rampage...

Jagshund 06-04-2010 02:57 PM

Only 4? I think if one was trying earnestly to mow down cyclists they could do more damage than that, especially in CA. The article didn't really say whether or not it was a group or just 4 cyclists. What's the back story?

RWebb 06-04-2010 03:19 PM

back story unknown

maybe he/she was too tweaked out to do more carnage

Man Charged In Stabbing Of Bicyclists25-Year-Old Faces 3 Counts Of Battery, Ordered Held On $205,009 Bond

POSTED: Tuesday, June 1, 2010
UPDATED: 6:44 pm EDT June 1, 2010

Matt Salmons appears in court Tuesday morning on two counts of aggravated battery and one count of simple battery.
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- A 25-year-old man is facing two counts of aggravated battery after an altercation with several bicyclists participating in a Memorial Day ride that ended with two riders in the hospital with stab wounds.

According to the arrest report, the incident began when the side-view mirror of Matt Salmons pickup truck struck one of the riders as a group pulled into the Kent Campus of Florida State College at Jacksonville just before 11 a.m. Monday.

One of the riders completing a 60-mile ride told police he yelled at the vehicle to slow down.

"There was a slight altercation on the road," fellow rider Robert Brown said. "The guy followed the lead group back into the parking lot ... and words were exchanged."

Evidence technicians document the scene where two bicyclists were stabbed Monday morning in a fight with a motorist.

Witnesses told police that Salmons pulled his pickup in front of the rider and began an argument that escalated to pushing.

Police said after rider John Faulk stepped in and punched Salmons in the face, Faulk said he felt a sharp pain and realized he'd been stabbed.

Faulk was stabbed once in the stomach and five times in the back. He and a second rider who was cut on both arms were transported to Shands-Jacksonville Medical Center, where Faulk was listed in serious condition by the end of the day.

"The guy that guy sliced on the arm, he's in there trying to break it up, (saying) 'Don't do this. Back off,'" Brown told Channel 4.

Police said Salmons got back into his pickup and sped off after the attack. Witnesses said they gave police a description of the vehicle and its license plate number and he was stopped about a mile away and taken into custody.

According to the arrest report, Salmons told police he followed the cyclists into the parking lot "to check on them, but got into an argument with several people. The report says he told officers that after he was punched in the face, "I got my pocket knife and went to town."

Salmons also suffered minor injuries in the fight. He was treated at Shands before transported to jail.

Salmons appeared before a judge Tuesday morning on the two felony battery counts and a third charge of simple battery, a misdemeanor. He was ordered held on $205,009 bond pending an arraignment on June 23.

The victims were among at least 130 riders taking part in the North Florida Bike Club's annual Memorial Day ride that began and ended at the FSCJ on Roosevelt Boulevard.

The man who organized the ride told Channel 4 that aggressive motorists are an all-too-common problem for bicyclists.

"I'm just glad he didn't have a gun," Brown said of the attacker. "He could have done a lot more damage."

Why on the face of the earth would any judge allow bail at any amount for someone that just STABBED all those people?

Someone should stab the judge.

HHI944 06-04-2010 09:47 PM

Snipe, don't take this the wrong way, BUT... what makes:
"A well-regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed."

so much more important than:
"Excessive bail shall not be required, nor excessive fines imposed, nor cruel and unusual punishments inflicted"

???????

Just as a hypothetical: What if the truck driver was stopping to apologize, the cyclists accosted him and he happened to be well-versed in some form of self-defense (Say, Krav Maga), disarmed the cyclist and in the frenzy started attacking. When the popo showed up, the cyclists banded togethor, but an independant witness comes forward at trial for the defense. Then, by your standard, an innocent man would have been imprisoned until that trial, unjustly.

Believe it or not, our country was actually founded on the principle that it is better to let 100 guilty men go free than to unjustly imprison one innocent man.

m21sniper 06-04-2010 09:58 PM

That's not what happened though.

If it was legitimate self defense he doesn't belong in jail at all.

They are issuing citations here in Austin, to the tune of about 3-400 on cyclist since awareness has brought forth the massive problem. A defensive cycling course has been approved (by whoever makes the decision to accept certificates of course completion) to be used in municipal court.

I see 8 and 9 year olds on trial, clogging more arteries in the court system, while requesting deferred adjudication. I hope a few several get nailed, not by cars, but the courts. It's out of control in Lance country. Way out of control.

he should be arraigned next week

Jeez, Byron! practice the bike cop thing with using your bike as a shield before you go out again

another reason I support handguns for cyclists

I read the story where the man is quoted in his own words as having provoked the fight.

Did you read the story?

The guy admitted what happened.

Man, you are obtuse.

Seriously, at least read the article before you give me grief.

This guy is going to jail for a long time, and he deserves to.

Don't forget that he brushed against one of the cyclest with his truck and one thing that came out after that story was printed..

Matt Roger Salmons, 25, of the 1800 block of Gabin Road, has been cited twice each with careless driving, running a stop sign and speeding among 14 driving violations in the past eight years in Jacksonville, according to Duval County court records.

So this guy could just as easily been speeding past your house & hit one of your kids.. I do know that area very well, ridden it many times, have a lot of friends who were on that ride, even thought about going myself..

Randy, I am one with my bikes, but cleats are pretty shippery on pavement....
