ESPN Classic is playing interviews with him and some of his players. He was an incredible man.

J Wooden
Having grown up in Santa Monica during the Wooden era I always pulled for UCLA. I read his biography and in it, it stated that he'd start coaching the new guys by showing them how to put on their shoes correctly. Gotta love someone that gets down to the basics of the game like that.
I too miss the way the game was played back then. Seems to me it's lost a lot of the finesse that his players always seemed to excel at. RIP John Wooden, the standards you set will not be seen again any time soon. |
Hail Purdue! I used to walk by a painting of him in the basement of Purdue Memorial Union, each night when I would do my rounds.

that b&w photo is perfect in just about every way..wow.

John Wooden at UCLA basketball and John McKay at USC football. Wooden has awesome stats, but as men, they were both greats in the same town.
