Arthur Laffer: Tax Hikes and the 2011 Economic Collapse - WSJ.com

Jim Richards 06-07-2010 10:48 AM

I predict snow tires will be in great demand

legion 06-07-2010 10:59 AM

He's right.

pwd72s 06-07-2010 11:00 AM

Laffer's no dummy...

legion 06-07-2010 11:11 AM

I was having trouble understanding why we were going so long before the second dip, and why the economy seemd to actually be growing despite the impending tax hikes and increased regulation (government control).

Laffer's answer is essentially: get what you can when you can.

Pretty much that...unemployment figures being propped up because of Government jobs, many of those, like census workers, are temporary...lots of smoke & mirrors out there.

Don't forget that a single census worker is counted as up to three "jobs created".

The economic fundamentals are NOT sound at this time. Change may or may not be forthcoming. Markets and businesses HATE uncertainty...

Chocaholic 06-07-2010 11:30 AM

Very impressive bunch of dribble. Unless you're retiring in the next 2 or 3 years and happen to believe his crystal ball, the article isn't worth the paper it's (not) printed on. Looking at the market in 10 year increments is a more logical and less stressful model for retirement investing.

So....here's my sage prediction. The market will go up. The market will go down. People will get rich. People will get poor. But in the long run....no one knows jack shiss.

Slow news day?

Abbey Joesph Cohen of GS..says look to the underlying economy and that is pretty good...that it is a matter of the percentage of the tax hike...she says that there will be some selling for CG, but the money will be reset into the market after the tax liability takes place. Also the old addage is buy the rumor and sell the fact..or vicey versa..so markets will tend to be discounted before the fact arrives...

The end of the world is not going to take place because of the resetting of the old tax rate...it will tend to damper down the growth rate going forward..as capital that was available for investment is now diverted into the government coffers, but htis will have a lagging effect. .

This new tax increase will be one more nail in the coffin that Obama is building..

Jim Richards 06-07-2010 11:40 AM

it's B2's fault

pwd72s 06-07-2010 11:41 AM

Trying to shove us on to the politics board, Jim? Hey, if you wish to invest in snow tires, go right ahead.

Jim Richards 06-07-2010 11:42 AM

Re-read tabby's post, Paul. With your eyes open.

pwd72s 06-07-2010 11:47 AM

I did...I'm also not a believer of Abbey Joseph Cohen...she's been wrong too many times before.

Jim Richards 06-07-2010 11:53 AM

Wow, you made through the first two paragraphs before your eyes closed. Good job!

Insult all you like...Abbey's record as an "elf" on the old Wall Street Week TV show was pretty darned pathetic.

I think Jim's point is that Sir Tabs got the first political stab in (as usual).

agreed on that...it's difficult to discuss economics without politics creeping in these days...too much IS being influenced by Washington...

I think he was referring to the nail in the coffin part there Paul.

I think 2010 would be a good year to convert the wife to a Roth IRA
