Help me pick out a motorcycle jacket...
There don't appear to be many stores around that carry this stuff, so... here are my crirteria;
1) Textile or leather OK. 2) Minimal logos if any. 3) Vented for summer riding. 4) Jacket should be fairly simple and functional in design. I'm too old for flashy crap. Do they make jackets like this?

Check out New Enough Closeouts. Usually lots of good deals there. Most of big name makers of bike jackets make at least a couple models that fit your criteria. It all depends on your personal preferences and price range. I vote for a vented quality leather jacket with a zip out liner (for warmer days) with built in armor (not foam padding) for protection.

Very similar to my requirements. I didnt want flashy, just simple functional. I picked a Joe Rocket, Joe Rocket Alter Ego 2.0 Jacket - - Motorcycle Superstore .

Pour yourself a cup of coffee and read the NATO Thread. Lots of good relevant discussion there.

I have mostly Revit gear. Crash tested, mother approved. Buy from Dennis - he's awesome:

Langlitz. The original, still the best.

Stop by and talk to Alan at Johnson Leathers. They've been around forever, are very reputable, and can custom-make you anything you want for a reasonable price. A friend of mine had a jacket made from kangaroo, which is much lighter since it can be thinner, and it came out great. I had them make some pants to zip to my Vanson jacket as well as replace the armor in my Aerostitch. Take a look at Aerostitch Roadcrafters, too. Super practical, as you can have it off/on in 10 seconds and wear your street clothes underneath.

I just bought this jacket for $100 shipped from leatherup.com. Search for coupons you can get 10-15% off or free shipping. I have a 15% off code they sent me thats good until the 15th of this month if you want it. It is VERY nice. Vents where you need them, removable liner and amor, no weird tassles or adjustable side panels, all leather. Pictures and price do not do it justice. Read the reviews. Highly recommended.

Moses, I buy most of my stuff from NewEnough.com
As a nearly all year round rider, I have both leather and textile. Vented leather is actually quite comfortable in hot weather but obviously you must be moving. Textile is great for the cold weather and it provides a modicum of rain protection as well. Mesh is uber comfortable when hot out but I have concerns about its' abrasion resistance when asphalt surfing. Alot of the leather is fairly flashy for visibility, well so is the textile. But Vanson still makes simply styled jackets that are second to none.

VANSON leather. simply amazing. i have a 12 year old jacket that is just getting that perfect worn in look. i dont remember mine being called the "cobra" but it looks very similar to this. it is very understated. i had the same criteria. no billboards for me.
![]() looks like the prices have gone up significantly. i bought mine from Scuderia, near the mission district in san francisco. i have worn plenty of leathers, and this by far is the best one. buy once, buy for life. my wife tried to garage sell, my jacket, and matching pants (they zipper onto the jacket, so everything stays together in a crash). i seem to remember, insert-able armor bits, but i have lost mine a long time ago. i threatened divorce, and she dropped the subject.

An issue with gear is fit. Vanson stuff just does not fit me - it is cut too full around the chest and stomach and if I get one that is snug in the torso it is too short. The Revit stuff varies from model to model, but Dennis is incredibly good at fitting people over the phone. He is right down the street from me though so it is even more convenient. Also most of the Revit stuff has various liners that make a HUGE difference in comfort. I basically wear the same jacket year round. It has a waterproof liner as well as a thermal liner. I can run any combination depending on conditions. Same with the pants (I have the Off-Track jacket, which is now replaced by the Sand, and Dakar pants).
And the jacket is only one part of the gear. Don't forget pants, gloves, and boots. |

I had the same criteria a you. Got this jacket and am 100% satisfied. It has a removable inner lining and zipped openings for ventilation. Not crash tested (yet).
