Quit the Law... Days Are Much More Interesting Now (video)

I got bored with the corporate lawyer thing quite a while back, but it was a good paycheck, so I stuck with it.

Around the end of last year, a friend and client asked me to come on board to help run his company and free him up to do some of the things he wanted to do.

Now, I'm EVP of Defenshield. We design and sell ballistic protection systems.

During some backyard (literally) product testing, I took this with my Droid. Polo shirt, no body armor.

We've got more than 1000 units in the field, including the Pentagon (where they saved the lives of the 2 guards 10 weeks ago), US Naval Observatory, Nine Mile Nuclear Facility and bases and airfields around the world. But the backyard testing is where the real fun is!

I shot at Collins with .308, 7.62x39 and 5.56 (all factory loads) while he was behind one of our NIJ-IV rated units, and then he shot .45 ACP, .40 and 9mm while I was behind one of our NIJ-IIIA rated units. We had 3 other HD cameras and one high speed filming. There will be a produced video out in a month or so.

Just another day at the office. Hopefully we'll be doing RPG and blast-testing in a few months.

JP

Nice vid.

Always wondered why light tanks/utility vehicles didn't go with multiple layers of sprung Kevlar(to act as a catchers mitt) instead of all steel.
More lightweight, repairable, and adaptable.

I think steel is useful against a wider variety of attacks.

It would just take a blow torch or a shaped charge round to get through straight kevlar.

Our M1 Abrams use a classified composite armor. (Could be steel and kevlar for all I know.)

What happened to the last EVP the company hired...ahhh was it perhaps a product developmental mishap?

I hope that wasn't a top secret movie clip.
Are you going to have to kill us all now?

Modern tanks use a composite blend of armors.

The US Abrams has Depleted uranium sandwiched between layers of steel, ceramic and titanium. Very tough.

How much for one of those shields?

No matter how good the shield I don't think I'd ever let someone take shots at me....

Gentlemen -

Thanks for the kind words.

The unit I'm behind is rated to NIJ-IIIA (.44 Magnum resistant) and costs about $6500.

The unit below is an NIJ-IV rated (30-06 Armor Piercing). It costs about $15,500.

I shot at Collins while he was behind that unit. The first two shots were the shots on the left -- .308 (7.62x51), the next two were on the right -- 7.62.x39 (AK47) and the center two were 5.56mm. All were factory loads from newly opened boxes, shot from about 40' standoff. Yes, it's weird being behind one of those, but you poop a lot less after the first couple of shots. It's also very unsettling having a friend's head on the front post (or the chevron) and pulling the trigger. But, you remember the last time he stuck you with a bar tab, and pull the trigger.

The opaque armor will take all of the above... and more. It actually gets harder the more you hit it. We have an identical unit at the shop we've put multiple .50 BMG rounds into, without appreciable damage. If weight is not an issue, steel is the best solution for most ballistic protection requirements.

I have, on my desk a 12"x12" piece of glass that stopped a .50 BMG Armor Piercing Round -- 2745 FPS. It's cool (and very heavy) stuff.

AFTER the picture below was taken, I put 5 rounds of 12Ga 000 buck into the glass, and followed that up with 5 shots of .44 Magnum -- all at about 40'. No failures at all. You couldn't see through much of the glass, but the "safe side" had no penetration, the spall shield was pristine.
