20 years ago, I used to go to a tiny little shiathole bar on the upper eastside of Manhattan on Tuesday nights to see Donald Fagen. He'd roll in around 10 or 11. He was working out stuff for his New York Rock and Soul Review album. He'd play a bunch of that stuff which rocked and then he'd play something like Black Friday and blow the roof off the place.

well, go high or go home...

I've had 2 rehearsals with the band. Have charts (that are not straightforward - Aja anyone?) and scrawled notes for how we end the tunes. Definitely not a "sit back and groove" gig. The good thing is I know these songs in my head backwards and forwards (mostly forwards). And the songs kick ass and when you get them right it is a total buzz. Kinda like putting together a perfect lap on the track.

Will be other music coming up. Playing a block party in Venice next weekend with my jazz/blues/sad bastard group (amazing female vocalist), the funk band plays Molly Malone's on 17Jul, and I may end up subbing with the Steely Jam again in July or August depending on the other bass player's schedule.

That's from the "Making of Aja" DVD - freaking awesome disc. The above cut in particular gives great insight into how they made their records, and how brilliant (and frustrating) they are. The guitar solo examples are hilarious, and McDonalds vocals are beautiful.

Rainey is a monster. I'll just be trying to help the home team...
