I tip 20% usually, so $8 here but if paying cash I'd round to $10.

Arizona_928 09-15-2014 10:23 PM

Tip lol. What's that?
I would tip 5$ if the service was great, and I would hand it to the server. Not tip sharing. If it sucked big fat 0... and I wouldn't feel guilty. I know servers who bring in 300$ a night. Min wage is irrelevant.

porsche4life 09-15-2014 10:28 PM

So just because you know servers that make decent money its OK to short change this one?

DOOD... That's not even right.

You say $300 a night like it's some massive amount of money that justifies you being a cheapskate. What about a Tuesday night when the weather sucks and they make $20? I know a lot of people that were servers through college, even in a nice restaurant it's very much feast or famine.

Porsche-O-Phile 09-16-2014 03:50 AM

How is that different from any other industry?

Not saying it's justification to be cheap but the "it's feast or famine" argument can be applied to just about anything.

Tips are for service. If the service is truly poor, it shouldn't be rewarded, but the caveats are, "did you give him / her a chance to make things right and express what was wrong?" and "was it REALLY poor or is it just a case of unfair expectations?"

That said there have been a few (very few) cases when I've not tipped and spoken to a manager (and yelp).

My favorite is the Vegas nightclubs... charge >$400 for a bottle of $30 Grey Goose then expect you to pay 20% more because they walked it over to your table.

I lay six G-dubs out on the table and tell the waiter up front that I'm taking away $1 for every time they mess up. :D

T- To
I- Insure ( I know it's ensure)
P- Proper
S- Service

Historically 20% on a large tab.
More on a very small bill.
5-10% if they are not on their game. Everyone sometimes may have a bad day due to family problems, etc.

Usually 15% for prompt, attentive, and friendly service.
I take 10% of the total and add half of that...round it out to the nearest $ in favor of the server.

We went to a place a while back that not only auto-added an 18% gratuity (for a party of 4?) there was an additional tip line further down!

This really burns me... uh... it really isn't a tip at that point, it is a tax... I'm pretty sure this is just a gimmick by the restaurant to jack the price up... and screwing the wait staff in the process.

I've tipped over 100% for breakfast.... My wife and I sat down, simple light breakfast, under $10 total bill. However, we were there for about 2 hours BSing, place was slow, and waitress brought us at least 3 refills of coffee. So as I recall, I left $20+.... I ofter tip heavy for light orders, and add on for trips to the table.

Above OP scenario, I'd typically pay the bill with CC, and leave at least a $10 cash tip for good service.

And I agree with others above, tip bartenders heavy and learn their first name. Before long you are getting stiffer pours, bigger glasses, and they 'buy' you drinks.

Except for the places that auto-add tips. I'm offended by that, and typically leave no additional tip.

This waitress in Greece once said to me "YOU didn't leave me a tip!"

So I replied "Eat lots of fresh vegetables and don't forget to call your mother."
