No, Your Not My Friend Your My Kid or Wife but not my Friend!
 

Somewhere down the line we have got to this place where our kids are our friends and our wive's or husband's are our best friend. Well, IMO thats a bunch of crap.

Let me explain. To me a friend is a person that:

1) you don't judge their actions
2) they accept your actions
3) they don't care if you get fat or get lazy or lose a job
4) they enjoy being around you and you them but understand when its time to part for awhile.
5) get your sense of humor
6) you can tell them anything and rarely have to produce 'protective lies' or implement 'situation ethics'.
7) insults are only made with a light heart and never taken seriously
8) you can ask them to keep a big secret or lie for you
9) they will bail you out, cover for you and even provide cover or in some cases take the heat without wanting any pay back
10) normally last a lifetime but if not - then they is no misery or broken hearts

A spouse (wife) and your kid is a person that:

1) You would lay your life down for instantly
2) You work you azz off so they can have great stuff and a comfortable life
3) Your Wife is who you fantasize about her even when she gains 40lbs, your kid is who you think about all the other time.
4) You create life with your wife and respect what she has done to her body to provide that life, you see what your kid has done just to be born and stay alive and you thank God for that.
5) You judge them because when she is being a whiny b-ouch she is showing you disrespect and that sucks, when your kid messes up in school or sports or life you may feel that they should have and could have done better - their better than that and it only shows that they just don't care enough in your opinion.
6) You try very hard to teach them and solve their problems more so than you would do so for any friend.
7) You would kill anyone who hurt them and cry when they hurt
8) If you had to choose between them and your Mom, you would take them any day even though your Mom is...well, your Mom.
9) Even when they are in the wrong, you will still have their back and defend them
10) You can't forgive them very easily - not like you can a friend because they mean more to you than any friend ever will.

So, are my kids my friends? Nope - never will be.

Is my wife my friend? When we dated she was, not when we got married - she became more than a friend.

Well written. It's good to see how much you love your family.

My wife is my girlfriend. We still hold hands after 18 years of marrage. Most of both lists apply to my wife. We "get" each other.

My wife is my boating partner... just as soon as I buy a boat.

While I would agree with most of your list.

I can't imagine my wife not being my best friend or not getting my sense of humor.

My wife is my best friend. I know I can tell her anything(and often do) and she will not judge me.

That's where the whole institution absolutely falls flat on it's face for me. You also forgot to mention, "even when she's old and unattractive."

Actually, I agree with the rest of your post but completly DISAGREE with these three. My expectations of friends are rather high. If they behave abysmally, they will be judged for their actions (probably forgiven but definately judged), if I behave badly I do NOT expect them to accept my actions. If they get fat I could care less, lazy - take or leave, but if they lose a job, I would care. They are my friend and a job loss is a significant life event. I would care and help them out any way that I could.

Sninper? My husband is 50 pounds heavier than when I met him 20 years ago and he is more attractive to me than he has ever been. Now granted, he's a smokin' hot fellow, but the thing is that whatever he looks like, is what looks good to me. Twenty years from now, I intend to still be chasing him around the bedroom. Might need a cane to do it, but bring on the chase!

Old does not mean unattractive. Besides it is a two way street and I know my wife will be with me no matter what. Besides, I'll always remember her as the 18 year old hottie that she was when we met.
