1980 sc faster than an e 46 m3??

Could it be possible? I took my old bastard out of storage for the first time this year tonight. It is sort of a hodge podge of parts that I had laying around. Bone stock 3.2 , 40mm webers, ssi's, and a borla two in one out. That is it.
I got next to a guy in a black e46 m3 at the traffic light, and I was not expecting it, but when the light turned green, he launched. Having not driven this car in a while, I was happy to wring it out a little bit, and to my surprise, I literally walked away from him, I mean like 3 or 4 car lengths by the time I was halfway through 3rd. I don't think he was sandbagging either, I could hear his car screaming, and could tell he was shifting hard, I could see the cars balance upset when he grabbed gears.
We have an e 36 m3, and I always though that it would give my car a run for the money.
I was really expecting to get my ass handed to me. I backed off at about 100 mph, and slowed down, he rolled past me, and gave me the wave of defeat.
I thought I grew out of this stuff, but sometimes one cannot resist

Well if you won in the 3.2, I guess it means I would have absolutly thrashed him in my stock SC ;)

Holy crap the ol SC must be serious quick. Those are mighty quick at 4.8 sec. 0 to 60.M3 - E46
I wouldn'e even try one in mine.

sorry, but no way.. an e36 M3 is on par with RS Americas/964s and such, as far as power. An e46 is much quicker than an e36 M. Chalk this one up to you being a better driver than the kid driving his dad's car.. :)

I would guess that the M3 was a stick as the SMG box is pretty simple to operate.

I have both, and no, even with a bunch of work done to the SC, (no 3.2, but serious weight reduction and a short gearbox), the M3 is still a fair amount quicker, and as it gets going, much faster on the top end.

I'm guessing the M3 was a regular 3 series, badged as an M3

I just bought a 2003 M3. It is much faster than my 79SC race car.

Fred,

It was a kid with a 318is with M badges. Only way you would beat him.

That is what I first thought.

He was actually an older guy. He probably scared the poo out of himself once he got rolling and backed off . My little SC does rock though. I was shocked at how good it ran after I put it together.

Talk about a misleading headline. The above has nothing to do with a stock SC.

I had an '88 3.2 and stoplight dragged an E36 a couple of times up well into 4th gear. It was very close both times at 1 and 1. E46? No way unless your car is more modified than you said.

Fred, take a stopwatch out there and see what you're getting 0-60 and 0-100... you might be faster than you think.

Other than that, the M3 could've been seriously out of tune and/or had some bad gas running through buggered injectors. Long shot, I know, but could happen.

This is almost right up there with my story about how I whooped my friends 2010 GT3 along the Ring with my 1985 Carrera.

BTW, that GT3 is THE absolute best car I have ever driven. One sure thing that makes me nervous is high speed. I usually start feeling anxious passing 200 km/h. I took this car up to 285 km/h and felt just fine. Rock solid. No feeling at all that the front end was getting floaty as is usually the case with 911īs. Amazing.

I would indeed be interested in how quick the 3.2 SC actually is to 60... SmileWavy
