I meant light where I said white. After reading 911Freak's post, I'll stand by what I said. No such thing as pure.

Anyway, we'll see how tough it is to match "black" when I get my car back from the bodyshop.

Interesting stuff.

I don't know much about painting, but I had the hood on my black 930 painted and I can't see any mismatch with the fenders. The painter was good, but I just took him my hood so he didn't have the adjoining panels for reference.

See 911freak's post. All blacks have other colors in them. Where did you hear that, anyways?

McLovin 06-13-2010 10:40 AM

From my paint shop, they supply all the high end shops in the area, for the past 30 years.

I thought I may have some Porsche black in the can (I think it's L041?), with the color forumula on it. Can't find it, though. I think I recall there is some tiny amount of color added to it, I don't remember exactly what, but it is basically insignificant. I'm sure someone can dig up the paint formula for it.

They may have some color in it, but in amts that are very miniscule and likely not even noticeable to 99.9% of the population.

Anyways, it goes to the original poster's question. Black is an easy color to match. I know that from personal knowledge because I've sprayed it many times (spoilers, bumpers, wheels, etc.). Things like reds and whites are very difficult to match well by just using the paint formula and no custom color matching. Non metallic black like used on Porsche, VW, etc. is very easy to match. From the base color, it is the least "altered" color out there.

McLovin 06-13-2010 10:47 AM

See posts 3 and 4 for further examples. If those were red cars, or white cars (or any metallic colors), they'd be very noticeable. Because they are Porsche "substantially" Pure Black, they are not noticeable.

We repainted a 993 for a guy a couple of years ago. The car was black and he LOVED it - swore it was the "blackest-black" on the planet. Then he parked it next to one of the black cars that Steve painted and realized that it was no where near as black as he originally thought. Not a mark on the car and he paid my husband to dismantle and repaint it to make it really black.

PPG Black with a high quality clear. Not all clear is "clear" alot of it is slightly yellow. These cars are BLACK. They are so black they absorb the soul from other colors like a black hole in space pulls in all matter...

for the non-metallic blacks, the color codes may have changed, but that doesn't matter if the formula remains the same. for this discussion, the color code is basically meaningless.

Those are some nice looking jobs!

So, in your experience (which is a lot more than mine), is the statement in the original post true?

"black is the easiest color to color match"

(And, if not, what do you think is the easiest to match?)

if the color code changed then the formula has changed. thats the point. we've painted thousands of 'black' cars (porsches, etc) at our shop and none of them used the basic black out of the can, they all have some type of mixing colors added in.

kaisen 06-14-2010 10:44 AM

When I had my black Mercedes 6.9 painted several years ago, my painter suggested we do single-stage urethane as the clear coats can be milky/cloudy (white) or, as Anglea pointed out, yellow. Plus we did the primer in black epoxy to avoid the show-through. That car was ink black, but he did such a fantastic job with the color sanding and polishing that it was a mirror. No orange peel makes a big difference in how the paint refracts.

OK then, in your opinion, what color is easier to color match than a plain porsche non-metallic black?

rattlsnak 06-14-2010 11:23 AM

I wasnt stating that black wasnt easy to match, just that there isnt any 'black only' paint pigments on cars that i have ever seen. They all have small amounts of other colors added to the mix.

"How much more black can it be?"
