95 ford diesel? fire Dept truck?

Looking at a 95 Ford diesel crew cab truck that has 200k on the motor. It was purchased at an aution and the retired old man (use to be on of my sub contractors) cleaned it up and wanted to get rid of it. Anyone know if these were the year(s) Fords that had problems? This was their one ton utility truck. I know some city trucks like the fire dept.'s got extra goodies in there that made them stronger or better like special rads or special hoses. Anyone? I have a 93 cummins that I really like It has 90+ K on the motor, but I am thinking about another truck so my guys can beat up on our construction site.

Jeff

Yeah, the tranny and everything on the truck will fall apart before the motor is broken in.

Pretty sure that '95 was the first year for the Powerstroke, (direct injection). If it says Powerstroke on an emblem, you're good to go. Assuming it was maintained, but fire depts. usually keep-up well on maintenance.

Those first PSDs were the lowest output and did not have intercoolers, they are actually the most indestructible of them all. Best fuel mileage as well.

1995 was the first direct-inject Powerstroke
I wouldn't think a Fire Dept would/could put on 200K in 15 years
And there were no special service parts for those trucks or engines when in govt/police/fire service

My brother bought a used '92 Ford Diesel 1-ton.....Engine high mileage and runs great, BUT:

$2,000 to replace the injector pump
$3,000 to replace the clutch (4x4)

He's wishing he had my '92 Toyota......

Unless it had an EMS chassis on it....

The ambulance package only had an extra alternator under the hood and it was available as an option on any other PSD. (Completely unnecessary in most cases).

The Ambulance pkg was really just a certification, and Denis is correct that it had a second alternator.

'92 was a completely different motor. Different injection system. And turbocharged. Not a fair comparison at all.

I'm sure your 1992 Toyota is as heavy-duty, and it's a diesel, right? Not. Both cost more. But your brother got bent over, so don't think those are normal prices.

My Camry's front brake rotor costs $13, my 2007 Super Duty's was $170. Seeing (and feeling) the two side-by-side proved why.

So you guys think 200k on the odo is really no big deal on those motors. Which Ford diesels were having problems? Looks like they are really well built, robust, and can take a bit of construction type or work abuse.

Anyone know what a new motor or a rebuild cost on those?

thanks for the tip and the heads up on the toyota. I am a huge toyota fan and have always owned one (or two, now). I had great luck with their trucks. Very well built. I can tell you this, no toyota will out work or take abuse like the big diesel 1 ton trucks. Well, not the toyotas in the us. They are just bigger and can carry more.

I never said a Toyota would do what a 1-Ton Diesel would. Apples and Oranges for sure. Just sayin' what my Bro's experience was with a good running engine........

Best of luck in your venture - I'd have a Ford Diesel if I had the need to haul heavy loads.....
