Any hot girls in your class that you can study with?

looneybin 06-21-2010 08:56 AM

what about becoming a veterinarian, you would get to be outside on the days you are arm deep in a cow or horse

cstreit 06-21-2010 08:58 AM

Sounds like you need to sell drugs out of a small Porsche repair and customization shop.

Plz.... No flaming... if you feel the need to call me a wuss and say I'm a quitter just don't post....

I'm looking for career field suggestions... Throw 'em out there....

(edit).... Thought I should add that I'm an autocross fanatic....

It's not the size of the dog in the fight that matters...it is the size of the fight in the dog.

Thats just not me... Take my word for it...

m21sniper 06-21-2010 09:41 AM

No problem man. Not everyone gets a thrill out of getting chased down the street in reverse by 20 bat wielding Puerto Ricans.

porsche4life 06-21-2010 09:42 AM

Nope... Not my idea of a good time....

Dueller 06-21-2010 10:02 AM

Just out of curiosity, Sid, why did you decide on Pharmacy School in the first place?

RWebb 06-21-2010 10:04 AM

you might try to go into engineering for a bio-pharma firm

add some biol. & micro-biol. classes b/c that is what you'd most likely be designing

s_morrison57 06-21-2010 10:11 AM

If you don't like it now, the work that is then I don't think its going to get better as the years pass

Tim Hancock 06-21-2010 10:40 AM

I am a machine design engineer. Being very mechanically minded my whole young life, I thought I would enjoy designing/building/troubleshooting automated machinery. Well after a few years of it, it got real old real quick. By the time I realized how much I hated it, I had a family to support and 20 years after starting this job, I am still at it making my barely "adequate" wage with health insurance. I know I should do something with my mechanical skills I have devoloped/fine tuned over the years, but I guess with age comes a bit of laziness and/or fear of rocking the boat.

All that said..... of all the jobs I had during my early years, I would have to say my favorite was driving a semi truck for a buddies dad when I was in college. It consisted of picking up a load then driving 3 hrs each way on the Ohio turnpike.... Plenty of time to daydream/plan all my hobbies while getting paid. At least once a week for the past several years I find myself thinking back to those worry free "gear jamming" days. ;):D

I tried to help with the funk, didn't explain very clearly...

It's all about goal. Setting goals and keeping them in sight really helps get through the funk.

I saw a documentary on Arnold Swartzenager. All of the people he delt with in his rise were most impressed with his setting and focusing on goals. Believe it or not he did not make his big money on the movies he was in. He used the body building competitions as capital for high risk real estate investment. The kind that only one in 10 paid off, but when one did pay off it paid for 20 or 30 investment failures. He started with 1, 5, and 10 year plans that he kept updating since he was 14. It was very interesting that his body building was just a means to an end. Taking something he was good at and using it to achieve his life goals.

Isn't that what got John Paul Jr and his dad in a wee bit of trouble?

GH85Carrera 06-21-2010 11:27 AM

I know a few people that took a hobby as a career and quickly ruined the fun of the hobby for themselves.

In the end it is called WORK because it is just a job. That does not mean you have to hate doing it. I know there are a lot of jobs I simply don’t want. Some of them pay very well. I could never work in the food industry. I know some people that own restaurants, and that is a tough job. Doing something you are good at is fun if you can receive the customer feedback. We recently finished a job that the customer took the time to call and say how happy they are with the final product. That will make your day.

Can't say for one specific reason... I have always excelled in Science so I knew I wanted to go that way. From things I had done in Scouts I knew the medical field interested me. I would have tried for med school but I am seriously squeamish.... I just flat can't handle blood. So I started looking at Pharmacy.

I enjoy most days at work... There are just times that I wonder if I could do it for the next 40yrs....

Noah930 06-21-2010 05:21 PM

There are plenty of specialties in medicine where there's little squeamishness involved. Plus, most people get used to it. Of course I think becoming an MD is a financially idiotic plan, but that's a different issue.

However, I think there are also lots of opportunities in "mid-level" providers in medicine, if that's the way you want to go. Nurse Practitioners and Physician's Assistants do a lot of what a doc does. I think that's a financially smarter way to go; you don't earn as much money, but the legal risk is much lower. Right now I'd guess the average pay is about $60-80K. I've heard of rare PAs who earn well into 6-figures, but that's not common. The ceiling for how much an NP or PA can earn will be how little can you pay an MD to do the same thing.

As to the latter point, fret not young grasshopper...in all liklihood watever professional path you take will probably see you in a variety of careers. Very few people get pigeonholed into one vocation or one employer/venture for their entire working life. To wit, you may become a pharmacist working for somebody, then go into medical supply sales, then to supervising a hospital pharmacy in an administrative capacity, then buy your own pharmacy and manage employees/pharmacists, then to teaching pre-pharm courses at a juco...who knows?

As to the former point, there are medical career fields that will be hot for years to come as a result of the aging boomers that want to live forever: hospital administration, geriatric care research, nutritionist field, physical therapy, etc. Sounds to me college level science is wearing you down...chin up lil fella...you'll figure it out. You have something very valuable most of us don't: YOUTH and TIME;)

Embraer 06-21-2010 05:36 PM

got offered a government job. ...i'm leaving the private sector for a 6 figure job, with a real retirement, and lots of days off. ...times are a changin'
