don't worry too much swang, if humans eff up too badly, then they will soon be unable to maintain an advanced technological civilization, so their ability to destroy will be greatly reduced

naturally, I advocate being proactive to ensure a nice existence on mutha Earth -- have you considered a career in semi-conductor ? you could then work on PV solar.

if. like some, you find engineering too simplistic and easy, too lacking in fundamentals, then how about solid-state physics -- you might be able to tunnel into some very useful findings, again helpful to PV or other adv. technologies.
