Earthquake!

I just lost my "earthquake" cherry -- we had a 30 to 45 second tremor here in Ontario that hit Toronto, Ottawa, and Kingston. I know it's nothing compared to what some of you have experienced . . .

Dude, that was a 5.5
That aint zackly small.

Welcome to the West Coast, specifically, SoCal.

Have a drink! You've survived. :)

a 5.5 is barely in...now an 8.7 is straight up the dirt rut!

Iffn you are sitting right on top of as 5.5 it's a wild ride.
if you're 50 miles away it's just something you notice.

An 8.7? You'd be lucky to live through it if you were at the EC.
WE all know the richter scale is a base 10 log scale, right?

To put it in perspective, iffn I did my calcumalations right a mag. 5.5 would release the energy equivalent to 3,000 tons of TNT.

An 8.7 magnitude would release the energy equivalent of closer to 250,000,000 tons of TNT.

True. In L.A. or San Francisco. But in Toronto, where the region isn't used to earthquakes and may not have stringent enough building codes -- well, I "shudder" to think of the potential damage.

BTW: pm'd you.

In metro-Detroit there was a big storm which is/was supposed to hit us. I thought I felt a gust of wind while inside of my house (like someone closing a door), looked outside but no storm hitting us. At least I think that's when it was supposed to be felt.

My wife tells me people on the street on first floors of buildings in downtown Detroit felt nothing. However other people on the upper floors flooded the exit stairwells not knowing what happened (like a terrorist attack) in an attempt to get out of their buildings ASAP.

I don't know what the building codes say about earthquakes, but TO does lie in close proximity to the Great Lakes -St. Lawrence Rift Valley; which does make earthquakes a possibility.

There have been shakes down har in Nord Tejas as well - some say it is the Barnett Shale gas drilling cause'n all da comotion. Your bound to do sump'n bu poke'n 30,000 holes inta da ground some 7000 to 14,000 feet deep! Iz suspects Canada ain't no different.
