So What is he thinking?

So I get home from work and let the furry beast out. After his usual greatings he goes off to sniff and pee on things of interest in the yard. I go inside and start to read my emails. I turn on the camera system (4 camera system, two front yard two back, the feed rotates between cameras, it dosen't record) and I see a truck backing into a spot in front of mine. He backs up until his huge trailer hitch is almost touching the front of my truck and then the camera switches feed to the next camera. I cycle it back to the right camera and his truck is pulled forward.

The phone then rings. It's my neibour. She asks if I know the guy with the green truck out front that just hit my truck? I say no and off I go outside. I get there in time to see a fat 70 year old bald guy going into the neibours yard across the street. Before I can say anything he's inside their house.

I go look at my truck and there is a scuff mark on the front vallance which lines up perfectly where his trailer hitch is.

Not major damage but enough that you can notice it.

I go inside to get my camera. Take pics of the trucks and the damage.

I write a note that says "When you back up and hit another car you never know who's watching. You were caught on video and a neibour saw you. Learn to drive"
and I put it on his windshield.

I go back in and I'm watching the video feed and I see him come out and take the note off his windshield. Read it. He looks at my house and crumples the note and walks back inside.

I call the cops. They tell me until he actually leaves the scene with out exchanging info he really has not broken the law.

So I wait.

4.5 hrs goes by and I see the lights on his truck come on. By the time I get outside he's gone,

Now it's hit and run (failure to exchange particulars).

So tomorrow I get to go make a police report and he will be charged. His insurance and licence will go up & what ever the fine will be.

So . . . . You couldn't . . .. you know . . . . walk over to the house he was in and knock on the door and talk to him about it? Why all the shenanigans?

So . . . . He couldn't . . .. you know . . . . walk over to the house I was in and knock on the door and say "I hit your truck, here's my info" Why all the stupidity?

Hat's off to the neighbor lady for giving you the head's up (I assume she's not from the house the guy visited). Do you get along well enough with the residents of the visited house to ask wtf is with the "fat 70 year old bald guy"?

I hit a car once, really slowly but enough to cause minor damage.
I asked around, nobody knew the owner.
Left a note with my phonenumber. That's why I have insurance.

Waiting for him to go away was maybe not needed, since you knew were he was.
But he did hit you and he did drive away, he does deserve the extra fine.

Perhaps the "fat 70 year old bald guy" figured that the note from you was just a friendly FYI telling him to "learn to drive" and may have thought that was that. Done deal.

about that 'leaving the scene' thing..
not quite like yours..
they backed into me at a light..
I got out to exchange the info..
they took of..
called the cops with their #'s...
informed nobody 'injured' tough **** buddy..
Cops did squat for me..
well I have enough good karma out there...
so...
getting her ride up and running was expensive I'm sure ;)

You'd have an aneurysm if you lived in Europe.

Parallel parking dictates contact with both the car in front of and in back of the spot you are trying to squeeze into.

Was living in a condo complex once. There was a guy in the complex that used to stand at the curb to the parking spaces and smoke. He smoked some weird off brand that probably no one within 50 miles had ever heard of.

One day I go out to my car and notice a butt on the rear bumper of the wifes White 240. Upon investigation it's the same brand that the guy smokes and it had slightly melted and discolored a small part of the bumper cover.

Come back from my errand and he's out smoking so we exchange greetings and I say, "do me a favor and watch where you flick you butts, one landed on the wifes car and did a bit of damage."

He immediately gets all defensive at the accusation claiming he's not the only one that smokes out there. I agree and tell him that the butt I found on the car was the same brand as his and no one else around here smokes them. Damage is not a big deal but please be more careful in the future.

He gets even more belligerent and I lose my patience with him.

Long story short it very quickly degrades into a physical altercation with police being called. No one presses any charges.

Few days later he comes over and apologizes.

Life's to short for petty crap like that.

well, thats 4.5 hours of your life mis spent. Video feed? Dude, where do you live? The barrio? You in Canada for pete's sake! Don't you guys drink beer and laugh over this stuff? (The guy is prolly a Newfy anyways)

I'm thinking maybe he didn't think he hit your truck and you don't say whether he bothered to look after tossing the note.

The "learn to drive" comment was unnecessary if you intended to get compensation for damage. Me, I would have left a second note saying that you called police and......

Now that he will be summoned to make good, expect retribution.

Canadians... ;)

So, when you said you, "let the furry beast out; after his usual greatings he goes off to sniff and pee on things of interest in the yard," I'm assuming that you're talking about a dog and not YOUR furry beast?

GWN7 06-25-2010 09:36 AM

Yes, furry beast = dog, about 85 lbs of

I'm pissed that since I bought this truck in Aug 08 it's been hit 4 times by people who have done the hit and run. First was someone rubbed the LF fender extension. I took it to the body shop and payed to have it repaired. Second was 2 kids in a CDN Tire parking lot who backed up into the rear doing $1200 damage. (woman going shopping got their licence #), Third was in Home Depot's parking lot parked in front of their security cameras. I went inside to see if their cameras picked up the plate number. Left my name, phone number and the store security never got back to me. Another $200 out of my pocket to fix the fender extension. Fourth someone broke the top of the tail light. It's 4' off the ground. How that one happened or where I have no idea.

I'm tired of people thinking it's no big deal to damage someone's property and drive off.

I have no idea who the people are who live there are. Never see anyone going in or out.

I live in a older part of town. My house is over 100 ys old. I grew up in this part of town. Working class, Blue collar area. I can go out for a walk at 2 am if I want to and not worry about getting mugged, but stuff still happens. After my motor home was broken into and I lost $3k worth of samples I bought a 4 camera survaliance system.

The neighbour who phoned I've know for 22 years. She acted as my day care for my son when his mom walked out. I saved her husbands life when he stroked out. She was going to let him sleep longer. We look after each other and what we have. She calls my 911 "her car"

As to "expect retribution"....if they are stupid enough, bring it....I have enough zombie defence supplies to look after my own.
