Is a 1983 Porsche 928 Automatic an "Exotic" Car?

Under your own personal definition of an "exotic car," is a 1983 928 automatic transmission car an "exotic" car?

You might as well be asking is a Buick an exotic car.

I suppose a high school kid who thinks modified Honda Civics are muscle cars might think a 928 is exotic.

The 928 was Porsche's top-of-the-line model for quite a while, but there are too many of them available for relatively low prices to be truely exotic.

Send a message via AIM to Gogar
If it has lasers mounted to the mirrors and a bayonet on the front bumper, then FK yeah it's exotic.

Revolutionary? Sure.
Clean sheet design? Sure.
Fast? Sure.
Flagship? Fuhrmann era, sure.
Exotic? Nah, not really.

WTF cares, anyway.

I don't think that it would be considered an exotic in modern times, but back when they first came out I would have to say they were probably seen by most as somewhat exotic. It was radically different car , and fast by standards at that time

The car was featured in Scar Face and Risky Business, and named Porsche's flagship car because it's not an exotic?

What about a 5 speed 1983 Euro?

Is that an exotic? why did you include a transmission selection to skew the results?

Why not ask if a 1987 5 speed S4 is an exotic? Or a GTS?

Hmmm?

Your question is designed to garner the result you are looking for, amigo.

I can post pix of Lamborghini's in a similar state. Does it mean anything?

Nope.

Yep. Exactly.

The 928S was the flagship of the Porsche line for 17 years, how could it NOT be exotic?

Pretty sure the 911 has been the flagship ever since it came out.... The 928 was intended to replace it but didn't.....

You're wrong (again).

The 928 was the Porsche flagship. Feel free to read up on it.

Seriously, have you ever even been for a ride in a Euro or S4 or GT 928? Imagine your 924 with another 200 horsepower and a far superior suspension system, and you have a 928. (Some early 928s are drastically underpowered, and i think that because THOSE cars are available for a song and a dance, and because they're so slow, that it hurts the reputation of the entire line).

I could care less, really. Mine runs a 13.67 in the quarter mile (That's 928GTS performance, though a GTS has vastly more top end than my 928 does) and it cost me a whopping $3400.

Works for me.

Sorry Bill, I do like the 928 (GTS is my favorite) but I have never considered it as an "Exotic"
(Nor have I ever seen the 911 as an exotic)

High cost and low production numbers are two criteria that need to be met IMO.

Well if you don't see the 911 as an exotic(i do), then sure, i can see you not looking at the 928 as an exotic either.

I can tell you this, in Philadelphia where Porsche's are fairly rare, and 928s are uber rare, my car gets LOTS of attention from folks.

In Kalifornia, i am sure it'd get way less, but in these parts, my 928, any 928, is very exotic.

PS: The last year the 928 was made it was $100,000 (in 1995, what's that in 2010 dollars?), and in no year did production ever exceed approx 2000-2200 units world wide. (i do not have the exact figures before me). 911 production was much, much higher most years, AFAIK.

Exactly! ...operative word here is WAS ...it was an exotic. ...Just like an old Lambo or Lotus was an exotic.

he has another point there too.

I suppose that the 911 has always been the flagskiff . ..even tho it always out sold the flagSHIP.

Well i'd certainly agree that by today's performance standards, the 928 (and most Porsche's ever made) are quite ordinary.

However, in their day....they were anything but. The 1987 928S4 for instance set the top speed world record at Bonneville for a production car. The GTS has a top speed of 188mph.

The 928 was not featured in so many movies like Weird Science, Scar Face and Risky Business, etc, etc. because it was considered "ordinary."

Perhaps I'm jaded coming from Los Angeles, but I don't know if any recent Porsches, other than the Carrera GT and 959, count exotics. Even a GT2/GT3/Turbo would be a stretch. 928 may have been the company flagship, but it's still not exotic. Nor was it 20 years ago.
