This had me completely stumped for a bit. If you figure it out, give people a while to think about it before posting.

I believe it has to do with the angle of the hypotenuse....

Don't look unless you want it spoiled.
















There's a concave curve on the hypotenuse of the top figure and a convex one on the bottom figure, compensating for the volume of the extra square.

That's what I was thinking, only my vocabulary was two fancy words short of explaining it.

Yeah, took me a minute, but you can see the path of the hypotenuse is not the same.

The angled blocks have different 'slopes' which changes the angle. 3/8 vs 2/5. good puzzle.
